Over the last eighteen months, I have made three purchases from Musician's Friend. Provided I can afford it, I prefer to shop locally; however, some of Musician's Friend's prices are hard to pass up, and given Musician's Friend's performance to date, I would not hesitate to tap them as a retail source again.
These are the things I have bought from Musician's Friend:
1. An Ibanez AF-75 hollow-body electric guitar, along with a hard-body case (made by TKL, but with a silver screen-printed Ibanez logo) and a 21-foot Hardwires cable;
2. A Roland Cube 30 modeling amplifier combo;
3. A pair of AKG K-240 55-ohm stereo headphones.
I have been completely satisfied with the quality of all this merchandise; everything came to me exactly as it was advertised, in packaging adequate to ensure that it would arrive undamaged. Musician's Friend not only packed my guitar in the case I ordered: as an added measure of protection, they also put that case into a big cardboard box. The action was set perfectly, so that all I had to do was tune the strings and start playing.
I was slightly surprised when the Roland amp combo came to me in the same box Roland had sealed it in at their factory, with no additional packaging. There was a hole in one side of the box--as if it had been jabbed with a pipe or something--so I got the UPS guy to make note of the damage to the box in case I had a problem with it. I didn't. The Roland Cube amps are built like little tanks, and the factory packaging did exactly what it was supposed to: protect the item in transit.
In two of the three purchases I made, the merchandise I ordered arrived within four working days of Musician's Friend's receipt of my money order. The lone exception to that speedy delivery occurred the first time I tried to order the Ibanez guitar in the fall of 2002--during the middle of a longshoremen's strike which practically shut down all the ports on the West Coast. Obviously that delay was beyond Musician's Friend's control. The guitar was a brand-new model, offered in Musician's Friend's catalog for the first time--and I jumped on it. When it became apparent that they could not deliver the guitar to me as initially promised, Musician's Friend immediately alerted me to this problem, giving me the choice of waiting out the back-order or getting a full refund. I took the latter option and had my money back within three days.
