Question concerning scanning resoultion (Reply to this comment)
by davieboy777
Comparing resolution of flatbed vs. film acanner: Is the advertised resolution on a flatbed dedicated to the entire 8 1/2 x 11 (or whatever) surface, whereas a 35mm film scanner's resolution is dedicated to only that little tiny area? I am looking for maximum quality, but have both 35mm and 4x5" negs and positives. Can you advise please?

... just because I would have liked to see some specific recommendations on what to look for with respect to resolution and so forth.

Good questions. I have found the settings I like through experimentation, you may get the best results doing the same. I'm not enough of an expert on this stuff to know the "recommended" settings, I've just found that 36bit scans in high quality mode and something around 200 dpi work fairly well for prints up to 5X7 or possibly a bit larger (this makes about a 24meg file).
Each file format has it's own advantages and disadvantages, again I'm no expert on that. You are correct, JPEG format files are much larger, this is apparently because the file contains much more information on the image. JPEG files tend to expand and compress with much less quality loss than other format types from what I've seen. JPEG is apparently the standard for electronic typesetting equipment.

Prime 1800U scanner (Reply to this comment)
by nden
disk space taken by a scan is as follows:
1800 dpi (12 mb); 6000 dpi(133mb)
Q: what is a recommended DPI for 35mm slides for home use. What about DPI for 35mm negatives?
Q: a typical JPEG pic takes maybe 500kb. Why is there such a huge difference?
Thanks Neville Denetto
