| DiamondDave's Full Review: Powertel Mobile Phone Service in Atlanta |
I've been a Powertel subscriber for about two years now and I have never considered switching providers. They deliver what they promise and that's value. Until someone beats that, I'm staying put.
I have been on the $20/month with 100 anytime minutes since I signed up and only once have I gone over my allotment. I very rarely leave Powertel's coverage area, but when I have I have had no problems with roaming, although I wouldn't mind if it were cheaper.
Here are some things that make Powertel cool:
First incoming minute free
Free Voicemail
Free caller-id
Cheap phone-to-phone text messaging
No contract
Good prices on phones
Low activation charges
Free local calls within Powertel service area
GSM protocol means world-wide compatibility
Here are some things Powertel could improve:
Larger coverage area, like nationwide, however there are plans for Powertel to be bought-out by Voicestream (and then DeutscheTelecom) and once that happens, their coverage area will increase dramatically.
Since I've signed up, I've seen noticeable improvements in Powertel's network infrastructure. It used to be you had to be fairly close to an interstate or larger suburb to get a decent signal. Now there are places where I used to barely get a signal, or get no signal, but now get four bars on the signal meter, and these are rural areas in Peachtree City and Newnan. I never have trouble making or receiving a call.
Powertel started out with a high quality service for a great price and has been continuously improving. I highly recommend them, especially if you're a casual user. Of course right now they're offering 3600 minutes (that's 60 hours) with free long distance. I may just dump my landline for that price. If you're in the Atlanta area, or any other area covered by Powertel, you owe it to yourself and your wallet to give them some serious consideration. You'll be glad you did.
