| kfgecko's Full Review: FELLOWES 93730 - Easy Glide Gel Wrist & Mouse Pad ... |
I wanted a mouse pad that had a gel wrist support that moved along with your movements and this was in my companys office supplies catalog. I found it to be a well made mouse pad that works well for what it is intended to do.
Interestingly, I read the review by drmikenyc and have had a completely different experience. I use a corded optical wheel mouse by Logitech and it works just fine and precisely. I have had no tracking problems whatsoever. Im guessing that Fellowes improved the pad with a different mouse pad surface which does not have tracking issues with optical mice.
About the size of a typical mouse pad, the Easy Glide Gel is a plastic base with a pad area where a custom fit standard foam with spandex top mouse pad is seated. It is in the shape of a kidney bean and is a fairly good approximation of the area that you would move your mouse around in. I have had no problems with running over the boundaries, although it should be noted that I usually set my mice to have fast traveling pointers so I dont have to move my mouse very far.
The wrist pad is approximately a 6x3 gel pad that is slightly indented on the top to accommodate the form of your lower palm, as this is what rests on the pad. The gel is the typical comfortable gel you find in many wrist supports; it provides cushony support and is soft to the touch.
The main feature of this pad is the swiveling wrist pad. The plastic ball bearing and sliding mechanisms allow 2 degrees of translational movement (left-right, forward-back) and 1 degree of rotational movement (clockwise-counterclockwise). This lets you move the mouse in any way normally possible which means the pad does not inhibit you from any normal mouse movements; a very important point. Because of this, that means the wrist pad is able to constantly support your wrist in all movements. Thumbs up for its design.
The drawback is that the mechanism is made of plastic which has a tendency to squeak pretty badly. Its grating like fingernails on a chalkboard or rubbing Styrofoam incessantly. I had no choice but to lubricate the mechanism with WD40, but its not a permanent solution and is a little messy.
The pad is attractive and unobstrusive. I got the black one, and it blends itself well into the whole desk entourage. Rubber feet keep the thing from sliding around.
Overall, Im happy with the product. Its well design and works the way its intended. The only drawback is the squeaky operation which literally screams for constant lubrication.
