I learned about this book from reading another book of completely unrelated nature. I was vaguely interested in reading it, saw it at the library, and got it.
I have read the book in whole, and have to admit that it is a very well written book. It is quite coherent and well thought out by the author. However, I disagree with the author's conclusions. von Daniken does not base his conclusions of ancient alien life upon twisted or distorted facts. All of his conclusions are based upon solid facts. At times, he even quotes the Bible.
He theorizes that ancient structures such as the Egyptian Pyramids, Egyptian Sphynx, Stonehenge, the Easter Island Island statues and countless other mysteries were build with the help of extradinary alien life; he claims that God is an alien himself; he further exclaims that the miracles revealed in the Bible were the work of aliens (God being one); he claims we can communicate with aliens using mediums we have yet to discover; he attempts to explain away the mysteries left behind the Incas and other ancient civilizations.
He never directly contradicts the Bible with any of his conclusions. But his conclusion in its general form is in deep contrast with the Bible in this way: the soverignty of God is sacrified; underestimated; not realized. To say that, and mind you he has, it is even possible that God is just one of a million is absurd. This very principle is precisely what has led me to believe that he is very wrong is what he delares to be true.
A very well written book; very coherent; very well designed; just plain wrong.
