The Bottom Line Megahertz matters, so pick one that is within your needs.

For those of you that may be confused about all the latest phones with their 900 mhz, 2.1 ghz and all their fancy hertzy talk, this article will try to clear things up.

Facts
- Megahertz (MHz) and gigahertz (GHz) are frequencies that radio waves operate on. These frequencies are the means on communication between the phone's base and the handset or portable unit.

- A megahertz operates at one million hertz and a gigahertz operates at one billion hertz. Each hertz represents a cycles per second.

- The three most common frequency bands that current cordless phones operate at are at 46/49 MHz, 900 MHz, and 2.4 GHz. Phones with higher frequencies, usually have better clarity, range and interference.

- These frequencies can be affected by certain factors such as barriers, such as walls, electrical appliances, aluminum siding, intercoms, and other cordless phones within your phones range.

- Frequencies were added due to the crowding of the 46/49 frequency and later on the 900 MHz frequency. However the 46/49 and the 900 MHz are analog can still be scanned easily by commercial radio scanners.

Rundown
With most 2.5 GHz phones costing well over 100.00, choose the phone that you feel will give you the highest utility rate.

However the higher priced 2.4 GHz phones perform well outdoor and indoors and have further range then their lower megahertz counterparts.

These phones with their high megahertz rate also transmit on less traffic ridden frequencies that most radio scanners cannot, thus providing better security.

Thus you should consider megahertz in your purchase of the phone. If you are willing to shell out the money required for a 2.4 GHz do it cause they have better call quality, range, and security.
