Laughs, Love, Embarrassment, and Bullies

A good teen movie portrays the teenage years as realistically and honestly as possible. (The funnier, the better. HA!)

.

Real Genius was a staple pick when i'd get the pick at a video store. It wasn't so much that i required another viewing so much it was that the others had yet to seen it.

To this day, whenever i see a "no-purchase necessary" contest, i get the urge to go out and buy a couple crates of 3 x 5 cards...

Sorry for the insert, but where's "What's eating Gilbert Grape"?

Oh, excellent list! I loved remembering some of those films. If anything, I regret not being a child of the eighties so that I might have owned a "Save Ferris" bumper sticker to place on my car (erm!... I'm trying to get one). Such a funny film, and I've seen most of the others and found them to be excellent. Brilliant review! And thanks for adding me to your WOT. You seem to review a lot of things I am interested in, and have very similar views to me!

The R&J Rant (Reply to this comment)
by repulsemonkey
Alright, I apologize in advance for this one:

Shakespeare was actually critical of Romeo and Juliet's warp-speed romance, but the interpretations of his play usually lend it the sort of sentimentality associated with the play (especially the 19th century piece-o-sh*ts who rewrote it with a happy ending). There's tons of references to fate and the stars, etc. which hint at the fact that the characters refuse to take responsibility for their own impetuous actions. And don't forget how sprung Romeo was on Rosaline at the beginning--that's the reason he went to the Capulet party in the first place, to pick up on her.

Anyway, I think that in Shakespeare's mind, the romance was based on infatuation and not love and that's what ended up getting them in a whole world of trouble. But, that's too often overlooked by modern interpreters who would rather focus on sentimentality.

Forgive me for ranting, but get me started on Shakespeare and I never freakin' stop. (By the way, I love Luhrman's version, too.)

Two points... (Reply to this comment)

1) Back to the future. Mother falls for her son - how can you not love this movie? especially the guitar sequence!

2) Lost boys - good film, crap ending. Plus, exposure to Buffy/Cassidy (of preacher) have made me just laugh at the vampires in this.

Cool list though.

(Damn, that was three points)

I was wondering if you ever saw Valley Girls - it had to be one of Nicholas Cage's first movies and it was really good.

Missing flicks (Reply to this comment)

This was a great list. Not too many surprises, although I didn't see Real Genius coming! (Great choice, by the way!)

I think I'd have to add Footloose, Pump Up the Volume, and Clueless to my list.

But the biggest one missing from this is Little Darlings! How can you make a list of the greatest teen movies without Little Darlings?!

Awesome choices, other than that! ~Ryan

Particularly "Lost Boys," which I still have a copy of somewhere. :)

Nicely done.

I did enjoy "Rushmore" but I honestly wasn't as impressed with it as everyone else seemed to be! :-)

Thanks for reading!

...with "Pretty In Pink." ;)

John Hughes did crank out a good batch of coming-of-age films some years back. I've watched "Ferris Bueller" a gazillion times.

I also particularly enjoy "Some Kind of Wonderful," on your runner-up list.

I was curious to see if you'd have "Rushmore" on your list - I've only seen part of it, but it's a good one.

Yes, I enjoy looking back on this period in my life - would not want to relive it...unless I could do so looking like Molly Ringwald!
