Choosing an inkjet printer: the cost of it
Apr 23 '01
The Bottom Line If you print alot choose a laser printer. If an inkjet is for you read the Nov 6 2000 issue of PC magazine and buy a little more expensive printer.
There is a lot of info to digest before making an informed decision about which inkjet printer should you buy. I see a lot of college students that see the lexmark z32 for 70 dollars and immediately grab it thinking it will cost me the least money. In the end I would say that those same college students will probably spend many times the cost of the printer in the amount of ink that they buy. For a moment I would say step back and gather a little information before you go out and buy a printer.
To begin with How much and how often do you print. Is this answer going to be above 20 sheets a day? If it is I would suggest you stop looking at inkjet printers right now and start researching yourself about laser printers. Why? Well here is the deal: Laser printers print things really cheaply about 1 to 2 cents a page while inkjet printers generally cost 7 to 31cents per average page depending on how good or cheap the printer is. I don't really recommend a laser printer to the person who may use the printer once and leave it for weeks at a time. My experience with that senario isn't very good. I'm going to catch a little slack from laser printer die hards for saying this, but I know a number of people who have used laser printers. They commonly have problems with extra lines printing down the page, or a side of the page that the printer will barely print on. My sister had a laser printer, it was wonderful for the first few months. She printed a couple pages out from time to time. Then out of the blue the one side of the printer stopped printing. You see she had the printer on a tilted surface, guess which side stopped printing. Only she could figure out to fix it was to replace a full toner cartridge. I have never seen that problem with inkjet printers.
What I suggest: First go to your local library and pick up the November 6,2000 issue of PC magazine. It is their round up of inkjet printers. It gives the best information I have yet to find. From their results I would pick the epson sytlus 980 for it's cost of 7 cents a page and less than 200 for the printer and veto that lexmark z32 at 31 cents per page at 70 dollars for the printer. Others to look at are the 800 and 900 series HP printers all of which print a fair 9 to 11 cents per page at a range of 100- 250 dollars.
