The Bottom Line A fabulous show focusing on old school songs that had the band looking to be in a very good mood.
The second annual Great Horned Festival took place this past weekend at Brandeis University here in Waltham, and I have to say, despite a surprisingly low turnout (maybe 500 people at the most) the show proved to be very relaxing and enjoyable. The lineup was diverse, featuring local ska-core heroes The Mighty Mighty Bosstones, their current tour-mates Kicked in the Head and The Lost City Angels, as well as TIFFANY!!!! Yes, THAT Tiffany, the 80s one with I Think We're Alone Now. We got there about 2 hours after the show started, and when we got there, Tiffany was already on stage. We missed about half of her performance, but what we did see was kind of surprising. Her music had a lot more of a rock edge to it, although it was still definitely pop music. She closed with I Think We're Alone Now, which started out kind of reggae-like, and then became a huge cheesy power ballad, and even more scary, a rather big sing along. If anything, I was really disturbed by two things: 1)the fact that I was seeing Tiffany onstage and it was the year 2001 and 2)the fact that it was 2001 and everyone STILL knew the words to the song mentioned twice above. Permanent Daylight were up next on the little side stage area (wasn't really a stage, just a little squared off area of the lot where a band could set up) and I have to say they were awful. They're just a small local band (with Brandeis ties I think), but they were terrible. Besides the Bosstones (notice how I basically RUN this category on Epinions?), the band I was most looking forward to was Kicked in the Head. I had heard so many good things about this band, and I have to say, I was kind of let down. They weren't bad. They were just very raw and untamed. Their arrangements need work, and they definitely need to become a more cohesive unit, and tighter as a band. There is some definite potential there. The last act before the Bosstones took the stage was The Lost City Angels. I never thought I'd say this, but there now exists a band that is worse than Bim Skala Bim. These guys were "bloody awful" to quote the Clash. They closed with a cover of I Wanna Be Sedated that surely had the late, great Joey Ramone (rest his soul) spinning in his grave. Finally, it was time for the Bosstones to hit the stage. Thanks to the Lost City Angels, I was able to get right up against the rail, right in front of Ben Carr and his crazy dancing a$$. While a lot of people fight for position in front of lead singer Dicky Barrett, I'm quite happy being in front of Ben. As Dicky hit the mic he asked "who wants to dance?," and the band immediately went into their cover of Bob Marley's Simmer Down to open. The band got their answer quick, as the whole crowd was skanking and laughing and having a grand old time. There weren't any fairweather fans here, it was old timers all the way, and the band seemed to love that. The setlist reflected this, with Stand Off, a song I'd heard only once or twice before this show (Bosstones show #44) being a nice surprise, along with the 15 year old Bartender Song making a very very cool splash. For the most part, the rest of the set was kind of basic, though no less fun. After Hell of a Hat, Dicky asked for requests, and he heard a large throng of fans scream for Chocolate Pudding, and to my large and happy surprise, Johnny Vegas came out from behind his saxophone and sang Chocolate Pudding! WOOOOOOOOOOOO! After that, the band went into She Just Happened, a fabulous song from their now year old Pay Attention album. This song has just such a great breezy feel to it, and with temps reaching the mid 80s (which are very welcome after the winter we had), the climate was perfect. In fact, the whole show had a breezy, relaxed feel to it. The band seemed happy that there weren't a bunch of kids there who wanted to hear that "knock on wood song." Dicky was very vocal all day, joking with the crowd, bringing up a kid who had a "Boston sucks" t shirt and Yankees hat on and telling him "you have the biggest balls of anyone here" and proceding to kiss him square on the mouth, with his "texas sized cold." Dicky also called the festival the "Very Adequate Festival," talked about meeting Tiffany in the back, and talked in detail about how anyone who were to catch his cold would feel like crap on both ends of their body for days on end. After the show I was able to score the handwritten setlist used on stage. It only took me 44 Bosstones shows to score one! Overall, it was an impressive show in a completely relaxed and calm atmosphere, a beautiful change of pace from the usual sweaty Bosstones club show. Show 45 comes in December most likely, when it's THROWDOWN time again!
