Health??? Why waste my time on being healthy??

The Bottom Line Don't be afraid to use the student health clinic that your college or university offers to its students!!!

When I first came to college, my priorities were exactly where they should have been: partying at the fraternity houses and staying up till all hours of the night. Hahaha!! I felt the thrill of my newly obtained freedom and rather than being sensible about my eating habits (and drinking too), my sleep, and other things like that, I decided that having fun was the most important thing about college.

Unfortunately, it didn't take long for my bad habits to catch up with me. I started getting massively sore throats, fevers, and my glands in my neck were so swollen that it hurt to hold my head up. However, for some strange reason I couldn't find the time in my schedule to make it to the clinic. There just always seemed to be somthing else that was better going on.

After about 3 months, this caught up with me. I had mono and then had to get my tonsils out because the tonsilitis had gotten out of control. What could have been just a couple quick visits to the doctor and a few little prescriptions, turned into going home for surgery.

My advice for new college students it to have a great time adjusting to college life, but remember that being healthy and attending classes should be your number one goals. I think it's a safe assumption for me to say that almost every college has a free health clinic open to its students. Take advantage of this service provided by your college. After all, your tuition dollars are being spent to support the clinic. You might as well get what you're paying for.

If you get sick, go to the doctor, take your prescription, eat healthy foods, get some sleep . . . . and then . . . . you will get better!!!! (what a shocking result, huh?!?)
