What Doesn't Kill Us Makes Us Stronger . . .

The Bottom Line Try to keep an open mind and be tolerant!! Consideration for others is a key to being a good roommate!!

I have learned the true meaning of this commonly used quotation after my first year of college dorm life. The first phone call from my roommate seemed innocent enough last summer. We planned what we each would bring for the room and talked a little bit about ourselves. Little did I know what I was in for.

After coming to college I learned what she was really like. Rarely did she bathe or shower. She talked on the phone nearly 24 hours a day and blasted trashy tv shows in our mousehole of a room nearly just as often. Consideration was a word that was definitely not part of her vocabulary.

My first reaction was tears and then it quicly faded to intense anger. Somehow though, I've managed to stick it out with this terrible girl for the entire year. Let me share with you what I've learned: extreme tolerance, not everyone is just like me, sometimes you have to adapt to new situations that aren't pleasant.

Although this definitely wasn't the ideal roommate situation, I really have grown up a lot as a result of living with someone like her. It's helped me to mature and to take responsibility for myself. Despite my (intense) dislike for her, I've had to look past it and try to see her (few) good qualities.

I hope that each and every one of you ends up with a roommate who you can call your best friend . . . but to those of you who don't: you can survive it. It's only 1 year. Plus there are all kinds of other places to go besides your room: friends rooms, the library, your sorority or fraternity house, the student union, outside, etc. Hang in there!!!
