PAUL MASSON -- Will Sell Wine... At Any Time

Apr 24 '01

The Bottom Line Paul Masson is a jug wine producer; the Masson label is now owned by the 2nd largest wine producer in the U.S.A.

Paul Masson was a vintner -- born 1859, died 1940 -- who was an key figure in the development of California's wine industry. His winery was once a producer of premium and sparkling wines in Madera County, California. The company may be best remembered by some because of its use of Orson Welles as a celebrity spokesman in the late 1970's... "We will sell no wine before its time."

Today, PAUL MASSON is a jug wine producer of blended wines: Chablis, Rose, and Burgundy. Most bottled goods are packed in one-liter or larger sized jug (1.5 & 3 liter) or box (4 liter) containers. One of its most popular products is wine bottled in easy-opening carafes. I have tried, on numerous occasions, the Paul Masson Chablis, which I find to be an excellent, every day drink. This is a dry, light (11.5% ABV), fruity wine with some nice herbal tones. This wine is designed to be served chilled. Expect to pay about $4 per liter. This is actually a nice picnic wine, and is a good party drink that is very affordably priced.

In addition to blended wine products, distilled spirits are also marketed under the Paul Masson name (i.e., Paul Masson Grande Amber Brandy, formerly marketed as Paul Masson Brandy).

Paul Masson is now a division of the Canandaigua Wine Company -- a huge conglomerate that produces a variety of wine brands that are distributed nationally:

- Almaden (jug wines)
- Arbor Mist (one of the fastest growing brands in the U.S.)
- Inglenook (jug wines)
- Manischewitz (Kosher wine products)
- Mystic Cliffs
- Great Western Champagne (e.g., Cook's California Champagne)
- Paul Masson
- Taylor

Additionally, it recently added the following brands to its portfolio:

- Vendange
- Talus
- Heritage
- Nathanson Creek
- La Terre
- Farallon
(and other Sebastiani Wine brands)

The Canandaigua Wine Company is the second largest wine producer in the U.S.A. and is a division of Constellation Brands, Inc. -- a leading drinks wholesaler in the United Kingdom.
