| michuman's Full Review: Sony Handycam DCR-DVD300 DVD Camcorder |
One of the main advantages to using this camera was the fact of actually recording directly onto DVD, which gives you great control and durability over tape. However, such feat does not come cheap. During the first minutes of camera operation, I realized that the supplied battery pack gives you poor battery life when using the LCD flip out screen. I had to have another battery pack coming my way, this time the bulky, heavy and expensive $150 NP-QM91D battery pack. Also, after realizing that poor lighting video conditions require the use of a lamp to obtain brighter colors, I decided to acquire a HVL20DM lamp. Very nice indeed except that the supplied NP-FM50 battery pack cannot power the 20-watt lighting capability of the lamp so I had to invest an extra $100 for a NP-FM70 BATT PACK. Sony should have known better than to provide a DVD-R media instead of a DVD-RW for first camera try-outs. DVD-RWs are difficult to find. Finally, I had to invest an extra $40 for a battery charger so you can have the camera up and ready for shooting while your batteries are being charged up. I think Sony Corp. makes its big money by selling accessories and not cameras.
I think it's great to pop in the finalized recorded media into your computer's DVD-ROM drive and, using any cheap DVD-authoring software, do all the editing you want without the hassle of using the supplied software.
