I ordered top-down roman blinds in 7/03 and had a great experience with the company. I received beautiful blinds, right on time. I installed them easily. Although 3 of 7 blinds were made in the wrong color, the mistake was corrected quickly. Within 2 weeks I had everything installed, and 3 free, extra blinds (in the wrong color...I'm looking for somewhere else to put them.) I am placing another order with Smith and Noble today. I'll write a follow-up review to report whether my experience now is as good as the one last summer. I hope things will go just as well, recent reviews notwithstanding!
4/15/04 Update:
I received a second order placed with smith and noble recently. The blinds arrived very quickly, and they are BEAUTIFUL. I got the flat-fold roman shades with loop control (there is not cord hanging free, but rather a continuous loop which is fixed to the window so that children cannot get caught in it). The blinds look even better than the top-down blinds I got last year. In fact, they look better than a friend's blinds, who had them custom designed and installed for much more than these cost. The downside is that with the loop control feature, they are tricky to install. It took me a long time to get them in, and it was very difficult to estimate the angle at which the mounting screws go in (they go in at about a 35 degree angle, but you have to drill a hole first in order to get the screws in.) I got lucky and got the angle just about right just by eye-balling it, but if you happened to drill at too great or too shallow an angle, the blinds would look wrong.
I'm very enthusiastic about how these look (my husband thinks they look terrific, too), but I hesitate to get loop control blinds in the future because of the difficulty installing them.
I would suggest to prospective customers that they look at more than just 10 swatches before selecting fabrics. You can order 10 for free, think about them, and then order 10 more for free again later. Or, you can buy additional swatches, but I thought the price for the tiny swatches was rather high. They do have a large selection of fabrics.
Overall, I'm very pleased with the company, their products, and their service. I'll order from them again.
