The Official List--Top 10 Rap Albums of All Time
Apr 24 '01 (Updated Feb 23 '03)
The Bottom Line The following list does not include compilations, soundtracks or greatest hits.
OK, so what was I thinking last time? Time passes and we look back and you realize that the era influenced us. It's like staying up late while writing a song then waking up in the morning to find out that it sucked. "What the heck was I thinking?"
East Coast types will send me nasty notes for not representing their side much, but maybe they should pick up the production a bit. Hip Hop ain't just about rhymes...you gotta have beats and some arrangement too.
Now, I am not necessarily ranking the most influential albums of all time, just the one's that represent true quality and have the dopest mix of beats and rhymes. So, let me try to put together a true list of the best rap albums of all time...not that I respect hip hop all that much...
...so here it is:
10)Public Enemy-It Takes A Nation...
9)Sir Mix-A-Lot-Swass
8)Ice Cube-Amerikkkas Most Wanted
7)The DOC-No One Can Do It Better
6)Snoop Doggy Dogg-Doggy Style
5)Beastie Boys-License to Ill
4)Dr. Dre-2001
3)NWA-Straigt Outta Compton
2)Beastie Boys-Paul's Boutique
1)Dr.Dre-The Chronic
If you want great hip hop production along with good lyrics and beats then this is the list. So when compiling your list, don't let others influence your decision to inlcude some MC just because they think he's made his mark. All in all, it was tough to come up with ten quality albums.
And one more thing, I don't want Nas fans to be upset just because you may think he has dope lyrics. His discretion on beats makes his albums suffer. Plus, I see his name most on the "Used" cd rack when I go to the store. That says something about his lack of good beats. Hey, I like Ludacris but his albums suffer the same way. If only Ludacris had Dre...?
