I've had Verizon service since moving to Seattle in August '02, and their coverage is very reasonable if you have a good phone. I haven't gone off their digital network anywhere in the city -- although I've yet to find any carrier that covers Capitol Hill well. However, you have to watch out for salespeople who won't tell you the whole story or who may blatantly promise something that they can't deliver. For example, I came in with single rate West coverage (since discontinued) with night minutes starting at 8 pm, and when I went to the Bellevue store to see if I could increase my minutes and still keep the 8 pm start time, they promised that would work. However, it turned out they lied, and I immediately started getting billed for peak hours until 9 pm. With Verizon you only have 30 days before you can't go back to a previous plan, and if your previous plan was any kind of discontinued, limited time special offer, you can't go back, period. So be very careful before you make changes to your plan!!
Also, in my experience, refurbished phones that I got from my warranty were always worse than my original phone (I went through 3 in a short period of time), and they can only transfer phonebooks from certain models. So be careful before you cash in on that warranty. And to anyone just moving to the area, watch out! taxes/fees etc. are particularly high in Washington, so your end cost will be more than you think. Make sales people tell you the FINAL after taxes/fees cost of your plan. (For example, my $55 plan costs $74/month really). In general, don't expect Verizon to volunteer any information, ask about everything that could cost you. Also, they just switched billing so you can't get your itemized bill in the mail anymore, you can only get it online, unless you want to pay another $2/month, and their billing layout is notoriously confusing. In summary, their coverage may be worth choosing them in Seattle, but be very, very wary before signing on the dotted line. And if you really don't want to deal with anyone lying to you, this is not the carrier for you. Good luck choosing a carrier!
