Biographical Movies That Really Sparkled

Apr 24 '01

The Bottom Line Biographical movies are a dime a dozen, here are the ones that sparkle in my eyes.

I can't help feeling that many of the greatest films captured on the big screen were those based greatly on real people or actual events that impacted our histories. This is my list of favorites that fall within this genre, in no particular order.

10)Braveheart-The motion picture that rocked the big screen not so long ago. This was Mel Gibson's best role without a doubt. The story of William Wallace, one man who rose above all the Scottish people. One man questing vengeance and freedom...one incredible man, one phenomenal motion picture.

9)The Buddy Holly Story-The role that landed Gary Busey an Oscar nomination. His portrayal of Buddy Holly sparkled, while also providing the nation with one pretty spectacular soundtrack.

8)La Bamba-The role that signified the emergence of Lou Diamond Phillips. The story of Richie Valens, with one scene taking my breath completely away. Richie's older brother running up a hill screaming out, "Richie!!!" That scene chokes me up every time.

7)Selena-Yet another film about an up and coming female musician. Not to mention starring an up and coming actress/musician named Jennifer Lopez. This was an absolutely mesmerizing motion picture with many great scenes.

6)Jim Thorpe: All American-This classic motion picture starred a very young Burt Lancaster as the graceful Jim Thorpe. A fantastic heartfelt movie with splendid well rounded performances.

5)Brian's Song-This motion picture starred Billie Dee Williams and James Caan. The story about Gale Sayers and his relationship with his best friend. This is about as strong a tear jerker as you ever may see.

4)Schindler's List-A motion picture about one man's willingness to do the right thing. A German officer that aids the Jews receive their freedom. A Steven Spielberg great.

3)Mask-The true story, starring Cher and Eric Stoltz, about a boy with a rare disease. This is a fantastic movie from beginning to end.

2)Glory-The story of the first all black regiment to lead an attack during the Civil War. This has an all star cast consisting of Matthew Broderick, Cary Elwes, Denzell Washington, and Morgan Freeman. With that fact presented, this should give you an idea of just how good this is.

1)Yankee Doodle Dandy-The story of George M. Cohan, starring the late great James Cagney. The story of one man's devotion to his country. One of the most celebrated movies of all time, in my eyes.

There you have my list of magical biographical movies. I hope you enjoy these as much as I do. If you haven't had an opportunity to view any of these, I highly recommend you make a run to your local video store to check them out.
