Oh No! Here Come the Waterworks!Apr 24 '01 Write an essay on this topic. The Bottom Line Here are the movies that make me cry the most. Warning: Spoilers ahead! You know what is always the fear when creating a top ten list? You know that you are leaving something out. I have spent a rather large amount of time on this list but I'm still sure I'm forgetting something. Oh well, I guess I should do it anyway. I think that I am a big baby when it comes to crying at movies, books, anything like that. But these movies are the ones that made me cry hard and almost every time I watched it. Just want to add that there are some potential SPOILERS here. The parts of the movie that make me cry are usually at the end and I really think that this list would be completely pointless if I couldn't say when I cried. So consider yourself warned .... 10. Toy Story 2 When I was a kid I hated getting rid of my dolls. Rationally, I knew that they couldn't feel anything, but sometimes I would just cry when I saw old dolls at yard sales and such. So along comes this movie about a doll that was loved but eventually abandoned and I felt five again. Then they added a manipulative song! If I was little and saw this, I don't know if I would be able to handle it. 9. Forrest Gump Okay there were two times that I cried during this movie. First, when Bubba died. I think I would have been okay except when he said "I wanna go home, Forrest". That just did it. After that I was gone. The other time was at the end when Forrest was talking at Jenny's grave and he put the kid's letter on the grave. It just killed me that the kid wrote a letter. For some reason the idea of writing a letter and telling his father that he can't read it is so sad. 8. Stepmom I felt really guilty when I cried at this. It was so manipulative and you knew where it was heading the whole time, but I still cried. When the Susan Sarandon gives her daughter the personalized quilt, the floodgates opened. You can't help but picture yourself in that situation with your mom. (Or maybe it was just me) 7. Little Women Who doesn't cry when Beth dies? I cried when I read the book, I cried when I worked in the play, and I cried when I saw the movie. The version that is the best is the 1994 movie with the wonderful soundtrack. The music along with Claire Danes' performance makes a lethal combo. 6. Deep Impact At first glance this would seem like a really odd choice considering that it is an action movie. But if you watch it you see that it is much more of a drama than an action movie. The scene that always gets me is when Ron Eldard's character is on the spaceship and gets to hear from his wife and his son that he has never seen right before he dies. Last time I watched it I was sobbing so hard that my roommate stopped her phone conversation to see if I was okay. 5. A League of Their Own This is one of my favorite movies. It is a great sports comedy and chick flick. Of course there is that one scene that makes my eyes water. When the telegram is delivered to Betty telling her that her husband died I tear up. The image of Jimmy slowly walking down the aisle and everyone is feeling really bad for her but also relieved that it wasn't for them just gets to me. 4. Hope Floats Oh, no! It's another sentimental chick flick! Honestly I don't really care about Sandra Bullock's character. It's the little girl who makes me cry. The scene that is guaranteed to make me cry is when she is begging her father not to leave her and he drives off. You would think I had abandonment issues the way I cry at that. 3. Wit Maybe this doesn't count because it was never released in the theaters or anything. This is an HBO movie starring Emma Thompson as a professor who is dying of cancer. There were many times that I cried during this movie but the most moving one was at the end when she curled into a ball and cried while her old professor read to her from "The Runaway Bunny". I was so drained after watching that movie. 2. My Girl This is one of those classic weepy movies. The scene when Veda goes down to the funeral parlor and starts yelling at her friend in the coffin for dying on her is one of those scenes that pretty much defines the word tearjerker. I thought that I cried at this because I was young and cried at anything but when I saw it again about a year ago, I cried just as much. 1. Life is Beautiful This was a no-brainer for number one. This movie was so emotionally draining that it took me a few minutes before I was able to get up and drive home from the theater. At the very end I was crying both because I was happy and sad. That kid from the movie is so cute and anytime I saw him I started welling up. I don't think I have ever been so impacted by a movie. So that wraps it up. There's a bunch of movies that I'm sure I would cry at but haven't seen them (Steel Magnolias and Schindler's List, I'm looking at you). |
