Pros: pretty screen, good sound
Cons: wifty battery cover, no cradle, reliability/workmanship, service
The Bottom Line: Pass on the iPAQ 1945...just too touchy if you need a reliable PDA.

| jidecker's Full Review: Hewlett Packard iPAQ H1945 Pocket PC |
I purchased my iPAQ because it was the recommended (read: subsidized) PDA at my company. My geriatric Palm had given up the ghost and it was time.
I really wanted to like the 1945. It has a beautiful screen, excellent text entry, and even pretty decent sound.
What I didn't like, however, was the shoddy construction of the power/sync receiver in the base of the unit, which caused my iPAQ to start failing shortly after I received it. Grey "screens of death" without reset-ability, failure to sync when plugged in, and battery discharges that left the case hot to the touch over two hours later!
When my iPAQ was sent in the first time, I was informed that a repair would not be covered because of my "malicious damage" to the power unit that would cost $300 to repair (?). Because my company purchases scores of these, and because there was an ombudsman to nag the HP Service Center, they eventually relented and sent back my iPAQ with an "under warranty" fix. The fix? A new battery. Alas, it was a short-lived solution, since it began dying again the next day.
When my iPAQ was sent in the second time, it was gone for an entire month. It was returned, after several phone calls, with--you guessed it--a new battery. And promptly began bombing again. By this time, HP's Service Center had spent more time with my iPAQ than I had.
More disconcerting than their failure to acknowledge the problem was the Service Center's lack of responsiveness. Literally hundreds of messages were left without response. Mysterious hand-offs that were dead ends resulted in another six week MIA PDA. I've been very disappointed with how HP's Service Center handled this, and their failure to simply replace an obvious "lemon" product...and I will not buy another. Neither will my company, actually, because of the service received in this instance.
The extended warranty is likely well spent if you opt for this product.
