The Bottom Line Keep trying new things
We have a 2-year-old cockatoo, Ricotta. She would rather play with her food than eat it. After much research I how found some tricks to make her eat. Only get food from a reliable pet store. Make sure the food is the proper mixture for the type of bird you have. Do whatever you can to get your bird to eat pellet food. It is very healthy for them. If your bird doesn't like the pellet food by itself, try pouring some hot water on it. Adding some veggies can help. In the morning when I'm making bisquick pancakes for my son, I make bird pancakes for our bird. I mix a small cup of bisquick with squash. I also add whatever veggies I have around corn, peas, or carrots. I bake what is called birdie bread. My cockatoo loves it. 2 boxes Jiffy Corn Muffin Mix 4 eggs 1/4 cup milk 3 tbs. oil 1 cup raisins 1 cup diced apple 1 cup grated carrots 1 cup grated zucchini Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Mix first ingredients together in large bowl. Add next 4 ingredients and mix well. Grease and flour 2 bread pans. Bake at 400 for 35 minutes. Variations: You can substitute any fruit or veggie such as: blueberries, cranberries, bananas, broccoli, squash, cauliflower, green beans, raspberries, spinach, nuts, pineapple, etc. You can also use other muffin mixes such as the oatmeal, bran, etc. This can be frozen. Treats can also be an excellent enhancement to your birds diet. Our bird likes yogurt treats; I get these from petstore.com over the Internet. If your bird is a larger bird, try giving it unsalted nuts still in the shell. Keep a box of corn and peas in your freezer to microwave for a snack for the bird. We always give the bird some of our dinner but you have to be careful here. Too much salt can make certain birds very ill. Cheese products are bad for birds. Cockatoos need calcium or they get the shakes but cheese is bad for them because of the fat. Cockatoos and cockatiels are prone to liver problems so feeding them table food with too much fat in it is a very bad thing to do. I hopes this help and enjoy your pet bird. |
