Home Schooling - The Student's Point Of View

The Bottom Line If the parent is willing to stay at home and educate the student, home schooling could be a good solution.

Home schooling - a learning technique that can have either a positive or a negative effect on a student’s education. This style of learning can be quite beneficial if both the student and the parent are willing to work together.

For myself and my family, studying at home became quite convenient and essential for several reasons. When I was younger, I studied in a private school for a few years. After awhile, my parents found the teachers to be an utter disgrace, and I was pulled out of school. I have been home schooling now for several years, and during that time, I have found the process to be both effective and in many ways, difficult. My lifestyle became very different from that of my friends. I was not able to see everyone, everyday in a classroom, and I never enjoyed being with students in home schooling groups, therefore I never became involved with any local groups. Also, dealing with the self-discipline of making myself sit and study was quite a challenge. I am glad to have spent at least a few years in school to learn some essential study habits.

However, my parents and I travel frequently, visiting family around the country as well as going to foreign countries. I have learned and discovered many things and have been exposed to many different lifestyles and cultures that I would not have been able to experience had I been placed back in school. Another thing I have learned through studying at home is that you have a much better opportunity of meeting people of different ages, races, backgrounds, and view points.

Home schooling is also a good alternative if a student requires or desires more of a challenge than that offered in certain schools. A cousin of mine was going to a local public high school. He is extremely intelligent, and his parents decided to let him take certain courses at the school and study the rest of his subjects at home. He is now one year ahead of his grade level.

In my opinion, the one thing that parents must remember when deciding to home school a student is that they must be willing to dedicate their time as a teacher. If the parents hold full-time jobs and have no intention of placing the student in a study group, then home schooling may not be the best option.
