Rubbermaid Dishpans: Various Uses

Written: Apr 24 '04
Pros:It is sturdy and longlasting.
Cons:It sometimes will get scratches.
The Bottom Line: If you are looking for a versatile container, this is one you must have!

I was using my Rubbermaid dishpan the other night and decided to check and see if there was one listed to review at Epinions. Hurray, there was! The reason that I’m glad I can share my experiences with you is that this is one of the most helpful and taken for granted daily used items in my household. A person uses so many things, while keeping house, that some are overlooked in importance. We all “love” our washers and dryers and we notice them because they are big items to buy and to use. But, oftentimes, we overlook those small things that make life easier. I actually own a few of these because they can be used for many things and they are easy to store.

I think that I’ve always owned one of these. I even owned one of these and used it to do dishes in it. Since it’s called a Dishpan, it seems obvious that you use it as a pan to do dishes in; and it works great for that purpose. Before I had an electric dishwasher and I was the dishwasher, I used one of these to do them in. It is a nice size and fit into my single (it doesn’t fit into a double) sink. The pan measures about 12 inches wide by about 15 inches long and is about 5 ½ inches deep. In fact, when my daughter moved into her new (old fashioned) apartment that doesn’t have a dishwasher a while back, I bought her one of these too. Fill it with hot, sudsy water and you are ready to wash dishes!

The pan is made of thick, durable and flexible plastic. It is thick enough to hold a load of water and still let you carry it or lift it if you need to move it from one surface to another. The rim that goes around the outside of the pan also serves as handles. They aren’t big nor do the rim look like handles but the rim does serve this purpose. The pan comes in a variety of colors but mine is a beige color like the picture here on Epinions (although here it is called white and I’ve seen white ones.) I tend to buy helpmates that don’t show the dirt quickly and usually shy away from the color white.

Since I’ve had a dishwasher now for years, I’ve found many other ways to use my Rubbermaid dishpan. One way I use it is as a carryall for my cleaning products and accessories when I clean the house. I just place all the products inside this pan and carry it with me as I use the products and do my cleaning.

I am on my feet for most of the day and when they are tired and aching, I put in foot soap and hot water and use the pan for soaking my feet. It is a perfect size and afterwards all I have to do is dump out the water and clean it up, dry it off, and put it away. Although I do have a foot massaging/soaking machine, I find that it is rather cumbersome to use and water gets into its nooks and crannies and is difficult to dry off. Using this pan is quick and easy.

I also use one of these to put in my school supplies. I have one filled with stickers, red pens, paper clips, a stapler and paper punch, etc. and I keep it on the table where I correct papers. However, if I want to correct papers at a different location, I just pick it up and take the supplies with me. It is very handy!

I’ve also seen them used in garages for storing small things. We have a similar (it’s not Rubbermaid) unit that my husband uses for storing things like paint brushes and other sundries that are pieces and parts of things he has out there but doesn’t want to lose. This Rubbermaid pan could hold lots of those items and then could easily be brought down from the shelves and then reshelved when not in use.

I am sure that you, too, could think of various household uses for a nice sturdy and nice sized container. I highly recommend this Rubbermaid product because they are designed and manufactured with the kind of quality that will make the product last for as long as you need it. The only glitch with this product is that, even though it is a flexible plastic, it will sometimes get scratches in it. Not deep enough to cause water loss but deep enough to show. However, I have never had to replace one. I just have bought more.
