Re: Where have you gone? (Reply to this comment)
by vicwang
Thanks, tator99. I really appreciate the kind words. It's a combination of many things, really... I think it's obvious that Epinions has made some decisions in the past year that were really smart in a financial sense, but just completely changed the dynamic of the site for the worse. One of them was "burying" editorial articles such as this one under layers and layers of links, to the point where nobody would ever be able to find such articles unless they were specifically look for them...
All complaints aside though, I've thought about making a "comeback" of sorts one of these days... so don't count me out yet ;-).

Great Advice! (Reply to this comment)
by jasonhofmann
I am very impressed by your advice, it is very close to that which I would have given :) In fact, I just signed up to epinions so I could "trust" you. I have owned Dell's and I have built a number of systems for myself and for clients, and I must say, you hit the nail on the head with your advice.
Note to CS people: I think the "Vendor Selection Problem" is NP-Hard :)

Excellent idea this Q&A's thing (Reply to this comment)
by isvikthere
Very well done and a brilliant idea to start your own 'you were asking' chapter, too bad the epinions fees are just a meager compensation for all your hard work. Hope the partnership thing helps a bit. I'm still not convinced about the AMD superiority in the fabrication field but performance benchmarks speak for themselves and as far as value for money goes they give Intel a real beating.
I recently read an article that AMD is aware that they need to deal with their heat/power consumption problems quickly. Cheers. ViK

RE: OS Cost? (Reply to this comment)

"I did notice that there was no cost added for an operating system though. Are you figuring that the buyer/assembler already has this?"
I guess I'm just so used to having Windows CD's all over the house whenever I need them, factoring in the cost for the OS just didn't occur to me. It technically should be factored into the cost though, so I'll go ahead and add something about that.
Thanks,

RE: Excellent yet again, vicwang! (Reply to this comment)

"I do have one question, however. Where on earth did you find a 17' (foot) Sony Trinitron monitor for only $325!?"
Heh... it's fixed now.
"Nice idea to go DDR, it's getting better everyday, and I still can't believe that price you found on RAM! That was one DIMM, right?"
That was the price for a single 256 meg DIMM, although I notice prices have gone up slightly in the past few weeks ($115 right now). Still, not bad for the best DDR available, and still about 1/2 as much as RDRAM (which, incidentally, is not available through Crucial.com).
"After years of computer games pushing hardware to no end, we've apparently hit a brick wall! I mean, seriously, a Celeron 700 could rip through today's games.. Oh well, at least a new computer will last forever..."
Very true. At least for web browsing, email, etc. I don't see modern PC's ever becoming "obsolete" in the traditional sense, since they'll always be able to do those basic tasks just fine. Of course, that is until web browsing, email, etc change so drastically that we'll need that much processing power for them. I don't really see that happening for at least 5 years though.
"...maybe I'll give you some questions for your next one. What category are you looking towards next?
Nothing in particular, really. Pretty much anything you can think of!
Thanks,

Great QnA Vic, (Reply to this comment)
by Gr8ful
I just put in my order for the Athlon 1333 with the KT7A mobo after "test driving" my buddy's and the benchmarks were phenomenal. This setup will fly circles around any P4 based system, even with only PC133 memory.
Thanks for another excellent post.

OS Cost? (Reply to this comment)
by ryansridge
Another excellent review! I did notice that there was no cost added for an operating system though. Are you figuring that the buyer/assembler already has this? I do see that one also is not included in the questioner's specs.
Hope I'm not nit-picking. I really do enjoy, benefit from and even look forward to all your reviews!

I do have one question, however. Where on earth did you find a 17' (foot) Sony Trinitron monitor for only $325!? A typo, I know :), but boy I wish it weren't!
Nice idea to go DDR, it's getting better everyday, and I still can't believe that price you found on RAM! That was one DIMM, right? I guess I'll have to check Crucial's DDR RAM prices again :)
What a sad state of affairs :( After years of computer games pushing hardware to no end, we've apparently hit a brick wall! I mean, seriously, a Celeron 700 could rip through today's games (equipped with enough RAM and a DDR graphics card) without missing much of a beat, and the Celeron is considered the weakest processor on the current market! Oh well, at least a new computer will last forever...
Good Q & A, maybe I'll give you some questions for your next one. What category are you looking towards next?
