The Bottom Line: Perfect combination of size, handling, safety and amenities. Ideal for a family that needs more space than some of the other high-end SUV's.
We got this car last July (July 2003) when it had just come out. We were expecting our first child and wanted to get rid of my "tin can" Honda CRV.
We looked at the Acura MDX, the BMW X5, the VW Toureg, the Explorer and Expedition, the Pathfinder and on and on and on!
We needed something that I could drive on a daily basis. I'm just under 5' 6" and I didn't want to drive some behemoth around. I wanted to be able to park easily, accelerate quickly, and do it all without worrying about SUV rollovers.
In addition, we needed something that could accomodate three dogs on 4-hour drives. Not just any three dogs, mind you - two Great Danes (130 lbs each) and one Cocker Spaniel.
The Volvo XC90 is the perfect combination of size, handling, and comfort. It doesn't drive like a bumpy truck, it holds TONS of stuff, and it handles like a dream. I never worry about rollovers or any other SUV-related malady. The third row folds FLAT, which was something we loved for making space for the dogs.
For children, the center back seat scoots right up nearly to the back of the front seats, and converts into a booster seat for toddlers. There are 4 headphone jacks for the second and third row passengers to listen to music via headphones.
According to my on-board computer, I get 19.9 miles per gallon. (I drive about 50% highway miles.)
All the other SUV's we looked at were either too small behind the back seats, had third rows that didn't fold flat so took up valuable space, rode like trucks, or were HUGE. This car is perfect! I plan on driving it for the next 5 or 6 years at least.
