As a patriotic American... (Reply to this comment)
by cowboyind
I take great offense and exception to your relaying of Aussies' comment that Yanks can't tell the difference between good beer and horsepiss. I, for one, CAN tell the difference, and horsepiss is in fact considerably better than many mass-market American beers.
Yeehaw. Thanks for the good review.

I had no idea that Foster's wasn't Australian! This is an ignorance I'm especially ashamed of being an Aussie myself (a Queenslander). I don't drink Foster's anyway, luckily. You were pretty spot on about the states' preferences for beer, too. I like XXXX, but I'm also fond of VB and Toohey's Old...

You're Not The first Aussie to Mention This (Reply to this comment)

It seems like every Australian I've ever met has railed against Foster's. I've heard it called "Australian for Budweiser."

Foster's (Reply to this comment)
by azirish
Nate, I needed a laugh today, thanks! I have been enjoying Foster's for the sheer reason that I thought it was truly an import. The taste is O.K. and it has more of a kick to it than most. Now the problem is it has been exposed. Just like bottled water, can I find a true import?! Thanks Nate for a very entertaining article, I loved it!

scmrak,
You are dead right about Foster's. On my forthcoming sojourn to Australia I will be preaching the gospel of Samuel Adams. I won't describe Bud, Miller, Coor's etc as beer. I will tell them it is comparable to Foster's ...

Juanita, great to see you here! I will be in Australia from June 27 to July 23. I don't know yet whether or not we will be able to make it to QLD. Are you still in Toowoomba? There's a good chance we'll make it to the Gold Coast to see Stu Barnett. Maybe we could rendezvous there?

Ozzie for the "pale yellow puddle surrounding the urinal cake." Seems I was close...
Nice attempt to restore the honor of your homeland, Nate. Now, if you could just go abroad and convince everybody that "Bud" isn't American for beer... except it'll take a lot of convincing since it's darned near true!

by jwolrige
I don't go near the stuff...And I have a half serious question, does anyone know of any Aussie who drinks Fosters in Australia??? I am yet to meet such a person.
Sean, how about another cyber drink...I'm grabbing a VB.
Nat, love your reviews. When are you coming home to visit???

Very well said, maestro. Not much to add, really, you summed it up nicely. I said as much when I reviewed this dunny-fermented cat's water about six months ago.
But, if I am feeling sad about being 10,000 miles from home, got a sad gut feeling that I have deserted most of what is holy to me, on occasion I'll turn to Fosters -- all the while screaming blue, bloody murder that CUB blocks the import of VB into the US to protect their bloody horrible brand.
But for today, I have a couple of Coopers STout I picked up last week. Ahhhhh.

what I said in my review of this pan water also..I don't think it matters where it is brewed, it just isn't very good at all.
Nice review as always,

Thanks Howard. You are dead right regarding Lowenbrau and Corona. Is there anywhere you haven't lived? I thought I got around pretty well, but it seems you have me beat! Australia does produce some excellent beers, and I would recommend that you try Cooper's, Redback, Cascade, Boag's and VB should you ever come across them.

Right you are, mate (Reply to this comment)

It's about time that someone said something. Foster's represents Australia, Corona represents Mexico, and Lowenbrau represents Germany in the minds of most American consumers...none of these brands is worth drinking...I have your word for it (and that's good enough for me) that Foster's DOES NOT represent the best Australia can do, I know (from nine years residence in Germany) that Lowenbrau is not a choice any serious lover of beer would make in Germany, and from my travels in Mexico and more than six years spent living on the border I know that Corona is not anywhere nearly as good as Pacifico, Tecate, and about two dozen other Mexican beers. What these "major" brands all have in common is GOOD marketing....to bad they didn't start with a good product. Nat, Well done, informative, and entertaining as always. Howard
