Pros: Fast burn time, Fast Rip speed, BurnProof Technology
Cons: Small internal buffer, Doesnt live up to speed claims, NERO Burn
The Bottom Line: Lots of claims, but doesnt live up to them.
Overall, a good device, but there are better ones out there, like the Sony Firewire CDRWs.

The TDK VeloCD 12x Internal IDE Burner is straight-forward to install, but doesnt live up to its full claims of superior speed and burn-proof technology.
I purchased the TDK VeloCD with after hearing that you could use your computer while burning and not have to stop surfing (or using Quicken, or whatever else) while the CD burns. Their "BurnProof Technology" - a software scheme that pauses the burner while the data is properly buffered - lured me in. The installation was simple and the computer immediately recognized the drive. The cd tray opened and closed with a very soft, peaceful and elegent whoosh. Really, TDK perfected the open/close sound on this device!
The software and driver installation took seconds and everything was up and running, ready to burn. Unfortunately, my first burn failed (and I was even using any other programs at the time.) Why? You guessed it "Buffer UnderRun." What happened to their BurnProof Technology? Beats me. I had all the settings correct, down to the DMA enabled, my other drive set to slave, etc. (By the way, the VeloCD comes set to MASTER and it is not possible to change it. It HAS to be the Master device on its IDE chain. Of course, the involved painstakingly removing my DVD Drive and changing it to slave.)
After a few reboots, and optimizing the system, I was able to burn CD's but it took 50% longer than a 12X burner should take to burn. TDK claims that RIPPING to the harddrive then BURNING to CD is faster than CD to CD burn with the VeloCD or other competing device. However, I found this was not the case.
Unfortunately, my experience with this device was not favorable, but I am sure that it is a quality device. It just needs a tender loving CPU, and my CPU was too harsh of an operating evironment. (Or perhaps it was that I just did a clean install of WinME, and the VeloCD didnt like it.)
