There is alternatives to the "5 hours for a 62 miles drive" from Arenal to Monteverde, check this site: arenal.net

Each of these reviews has been very interesting, and this one especially so. I think I would have found the large iguana population to be at least somewhat alarming. However, although I am not sure what a butterfly ranch is, it sounds charming.
I can hardly wait until your next holiday!
