Pros: Power, high limits, seats hold you in place
Cons: Heavy clutch, heavy lifeless steering, busy ride, should be much more fun

After writing this review I looked up what I suppose is the same review in Car & Driver, part of a comparison test. I'd previously read the review, but forgotten about it, or I guess I wouldn't have been so shocked by the test drive.

I drove a Toyota MR2 a couple of days ago. I truly don't understand why a sedan cannot have similarly direct steering. Of all the sedans I've driven recently, only the Lancer Ralliart comes close. Why? What is so hard about great steering? While many things about cars have improved in recent years, steering has generally gone downhill.

So, so nice to have a real opinion on the M3. I have drooled over this car for years, and every time I've read a car-mag review of it, I've wondered whether it was an honest evaluation, or just a regurgitation what the car's glowing reputation would lead readers to expect.

I must admit I'm a little saddened to read about the M3's driving experience. A recent review I read in Car and Driver hinted at the traits you described, but didn't go nearly as in-depth in its criticism--presumably to avoid angering the legions of would-be M3 drivers who would cancel their subscriptions if anyone criticized the object of their fantasies...

So how stoked are you that you got to test-drive an M3? Seems like the kind of car they'd be really hesitant to give demo drives in. At least, I'm pretty sure they'd turn me down. Then again, I supposed I'd turn down a spiky-haired, pierced twenty-something asking to test-drive a $50,000 sports car. Oh well... something to look forward to about geting older, right?

Each of the dealers near me has two or three on the lot, though some of these are used. I also see them about quite a bit, though no doubt they're much more common in SoCal.

Nice job on your review, I have not rode tested this particular model and I always thought BMW's were some of the best auto's in the industry. This review makes me think.......twice.
