Re: I didn't like this one so much (Reply to this comment)

I haven't driven the new Focus with the 2.3, but I bet I'd enjoy it, given the handling of the last two I drove. I don't know if I'd want to own one, though... I know they've re-done the interior, but it would have to be a really big improvement to be something I could live with.
More likely, my next car will be a Mazda3s, Lancer Ralliart, Celica GT, Corolla XRS, or--maybe--a Scion with all the TRD suspension parts. But since I still haven't unloaded my Eclipse, it's going to be a little while yet.
As far as the Vibe GT goes... I didn't want to get into this in the review body, and open the associated can of worms with readers, but I'm not a huge fan of the way it looks. Its styling is better than the Matrix, but it's going for the small-SUV look, and while a lot of people like little SUVs, that's not really my thing.
Otherwise, I have to say I really enjoyed this car. Part of our differering opinions on steering/handling may have had something to do with the fact that this particular car had the 17-inch wheel and tire package, possibly with some effect on steering feel and/or grip? Who knows. Either way, I'd be interested to read what you think of the '05.

I was disappointed by this car, especially the seats and driving position. I also drove it immediately after driving the Focus SVT, and this might have led me to appreciate the Vibe's steering and handling less.
The mildly redesigned 2005 is due soon. I'll have to take a look at one again when it arrives.
The best package for your needs might be a Focus wagon. Very good rear seat, cargo room, handling, and even performance with the 2.3. Find one used (probably not easy, as 5-speed wagons are rare), and it will be extra cheap. The new 2005 IP is not as attractive as the old one, but the new front end works better with the wagon body.
