| azuki's Full Review: Griffin Technology ITRIP FM TRANSMITTER FOR NEW (4... |
I just bought an iPod so that I could have something to listen to while I work. I spend 6-7 hours everyday on a refuse collection route, and music makes it a bit more enjoyable. However, the other place that I wanted to use it (as it stores my entire CD and MP3 collection) was the family car. Its a 2003 but it has no tape deck, thus iTrip to the rescue.
Like many new wireless applications today, the technology is not new, just refined and cost worthy to the consumer. The Griffin iTrip is another one of those many things.
It attaches to the top of the iPod in the headphone/remote jack, and is powered by the remote port. You download a playlist of radio frequencies from a CD or off the net, and you simply choose which you would like to use, depending on your location, radio traffic, etc. Find an empty band, press play/pause button, this will lock the frequency. Then go hit menu and search out a playlist or song and voila, it will play over the radio by converting the digital audio signal into a traditional FM signal. Very ingenious.
While the sound quality is limited to that of an FM signal, and thus anything you could ever listen to over the radio, you can notice that the sound seems sub par than through the ear phones or audio out. That's the limitation of the old technology.
I have used the iTrip in the office as well as the vehicle, and so far I have had no problems with it. Depending on the environment I will get some static when passing under powerlines at a RR crossing or with lots of computers, but that's about it.
It's an interesting way to unleash the sounds within the iPod to use everywhere, and its wireless (albeit FM). Its powered by the iPod, and fits sleekly on the top of it. The iPod is already a serious investment for the music lover/enthusiast out there, the iTrip is no different.
