Excellent review as I have grown accustomed to from you. :) We currently use Word XP as part of Office XP Pro and Standard at work and I am very impressed with it. So when it comes time to upgrade to Office 2003 it seems like other than the excess Microsoft seems to add to each incarnation of their suite software we should be happy with it. Thanks for the excellent review.

Very Nice Review (Reply to this comment)

I tried this version of Word and found it bloated with features I never intended to use. (And some of these features required loading programs at start-up, reducing my resources available.) They'd screwed up the comments function--something I DO use for editing--so badly, I took it off my computer and gave it to my son. (With the "new" registration process, that in itself was a chore.)

I agree. Some of the whistles and bells, like including voice commands, looked neat. Once you see how big the program really is and how many resources it eats, you might well be like me, reverting to my old friend, Word 97.

Very nice review.

I could not in good conscience recommend against the program because it does what it is supposed to do, allow you to product world class documents. The bloat while at time frustrating to no end, does not make Word 2003 unusable, or any less a word processor with substance. Is is it worth an upgrade from Word XP to Word 2003? It depends. If you use Word in a corporate environment where collaboration is fundamental to your mission, then yes Word 2003 is worth the upgrade. But if you are a home, small business user, or even a medium sized business, then no I would stick with your current version of Word.

You said 'For the average user—and I place myself in that category—Word 2003 is overkill on a large scale, but the alternatives are few and far between. Yet you recommend it in the end...

My question after reading this review is should I, a user of Office XP with Word XP in it, go out and buy the new version of Office 2003 or even just Word 2003? My impression, using this program on my own and after reading your epinion, is that there is not much benefit to upgrade for this program. I don't even know if I would have upgraded from Office 2000 if my work hadn't bought XP for me!

Let me know your thoughts on this...
