I wouldnt normally think to write a review of a cleaning product, but this product is too good not to mention. For me, cleaning around the house is the last thing I want to do. But it has to get done, and anything that makes cleaning faster and easier is worth looking at.
So I was intrigued when I found Clorox Clean-Up gel (with bleach) at a local store. The Clorox was less expensive than two competing products sitting next to it, so I threw it in my shopping cart.
The Clean-Up gel comes in a 17 ounce 11 upright container. It has a twist open and close top that is easy to operate.
Application
What makes the product so great is how easy it is to apply the cleaner where needed, especially for those used to Ajax or Comet powder cleaners.
To apply the Clean-Up gel, you simply twist open the pointed top, aim, and squeeze the container to release. Whether youre cleaning the sink or trying to reach the grouting between bathroom tiles, this product makes it extremely to clean easy without making a mess.
By comparison, the powder cleaners are messy to apply, oftentimes creating a small cloud of dust in the wake of an application, which you then must try to avoid inhaling. Liquid cleaners like Lysol are also quite messy, and more difficult to clean with.
The gel is more liquid-like than I expected, more like maple syrup in substance than the gel from a gel toothpaste. Once applied, the company recommends waiting one minute for tough stains, or you can immediately wipe away with a brush or sponge for lighter cleaning.
I wasnt initially confident that a gel would clean really well, but after several uses, it has proven to work well, maybe even better than the old powder cleaners. Since this is a gel, it is already wet and beings working right away. By comparison, the powder cleaners need to have water applied before becoming effective.
The product has a nice, clean smell, with only a hint of bleach, unlike the overwhelming chemical smell of powder and liquid spray cleaners. The gel has a bluish-green color. It quickly washes away, unlike powders that have to be thoroughly scrubbed and rinsed to remove. Because it contains bleach, you have to be careful not to splash on clothing, fabrics, or on any materials that may be discolored or damaged from bleach.
The not-so good
There are a few things I dont like about the Clorox Clean-Up gel. From a value-perspective, this product doesnt match the less-expensive powder alternatives, costing roughly twice that of the powder cleaners ounce-per-ounce where I shop. I also find that I go through product faster because I tend to apply more, and because its more convenient to use. Lastly, the packaging seems somewhat wasteful to me, using a significant amount of plastic that probably cant be recycled easily due to the contents.
Conclusion
For routine cleaning, the Clean-Up gel is a great improvement in convenience over previous powder cleaners. It may not have the value of other cleaning products, but for those who value convenience most, this is a wonderful new product.
