Re: Nice description of the town. Traffic is a bear. (Reply to this comment)

Greetings,
I hope you have a great trip. There are still plenty of elk wandering about Estes, just not as friendly.
I did go on one gold mine tour near Breckenrdige, but unfortunately cannot remember the name of the place. As far as rafting, it isn't something I've done in Colorado.
Thanks for reading and commenting,

Nice description of the town. Traffic is a bear. (Reply to this comment)

My family will be staying in Estes Park in a little over a week. We always give ourselves a day to adjust to the altitude before going up for a longer stay in the mountains. We're doing things a little different this time. Instead of going from Denver on 70 to 40 up to Winter Park and then eventually thru RMNP, we're going "backwards". This time we're staying in Estes 2 days for some horseback riding and site seeing. Then, its up into the park and down to Winter Park. I want to take pictures of the park on the east side of the divide in morning light instead of afternoon light. Too bad somebody killed that really friendly big elk. I got within 15ft of him 6 years ago in a meadow in RMNP. He was just awesome. Know of any good rafting companies in Winter Park? Have you ever done a gold mine tour?

Thanks for commenting. We just decided to go up next weekend ourselves. I guess my wife and I miss it a little too.

I used to go through Estes all the time on my way up to RMNP, stopping in for lunch or dinner on more than one occasion. Thanks for a good review that brings back a LOT of memories...

Yes Don, there is more than gas to be found at Estes Park. At least get some salt water taffy.
Thanks for reading.

Just gas? (Reply to this comment)

Usually it's only a gas stop. Maybe I had better take a closer look next time.
Great review,

Salt water taffy, yum! Sounds like a very neat place, never saw 'The Shining' and think I'll keep it that way :)
Happy to be of service, anytime.

Re: Nice work (Reply to this comment)

Thanks for the comment Kenn,
I added the crowds to the cons. I recall Estes Park as being one of the only places that they stop all the traffic and let you cross in any direction in the summer because it is so packed. With two comments both on the crowd, it seemed like something I needed to mention.

Excellent review, it brought back a lot of memories from my visit there almost two years ago. However, I ended up going right in mid-July, and the number of people was just gross. Plus, I've got just as good - if not better - scenery and hour away from me. It's one of those places I'm glad I went to, but have no desire to go back.

Thanks for the comment Phil. The traffic in the summer can be crazy, I almost noted that, but it really depends on what month you visit. In November there isn't much . . . of course in November you just about freeze your tukas off sometimes.
Thanks for reading,

I found this a terrific all round review. (Reply to this comment)

We stayed in Estes Park when visiting Rocky Mountain National Park. We actually camped at the park too. It was a great town except for the volume of traffic that flowed through it.
Though we didn't stay there, seeing the Stanley Hotel up on the top of the hill, and thinking of the movie, the Shining, gave me the creeps.
"Here's Johhnnny"
Once again, fine review.
