How I Chose My College this YearApr 29 '01 Write an essay on this topic. The Bottom Line Get a ranked system of criteria. Visit. Ask questions of stundents in your intended major to get an idea about coursework. Go with your gut. Once the SAT scores come back, the junior summer of community service is over, and the college applications are sent off there is a long period of nothingness for the high school senior. Talk about college is rampant, and overwhelming, but there is an end in sight. In November I applied to three schools: The Honors Program at the University of Michigan, The University of Pennsylvania, and The University of Notre Dame. I evaluated each college on a specific set of criteria that I developed. My first priority was the quality of the programs which I intended to study. I wanted to study business, so Wharton and Michigan were obvious choices, and Notre Dame has some of the most highly recruited accountatns in the country. Secondly, I wanted a place where if I decided to change a major I could do so, and furthermore I would have other excellent programs to choose from. For this second criterium, all three schools stacked up very well again. The third priority was the size and asthetics of the campus, including facilities and general quality of life. Upon investigating each, I found Notre Dame to be most awe inspiring campus I had yet seen. The facilities were all new or renovated, the campus was lively but still peaceful in many places, the food, dorms, and atmosphere far outweighed Michigan and Penn. I found Penn to be too urban for my taste, and the facilities were worn, overall the campus was very crowded, and I felt I would get lost there. Michigan was very nice, a thriving social scene was present, the facilities were great (second only to ND), but the campus was still very big and intimidating. My fourth priority was sports, I wanted a school with a strong sense of athletics and Michigan and Notre Dame have some of the greatest teams in the country, as well as plenty of intramural teams. Also, I wanted to be able to have acess to facilities outside of the school like museums and theatres. Penn had great access to Philidelphia and downtown, but the distance seemed almost too close. Notre Dame was a train ride from Chicago but it was still two hours away. Mchigan in Ann Arbor was really one town with a college in it, so all the schools were simply OK in the is category. After weighing all the choices and factors that I had set up and NOT my parents, I had a pretty good idea of where I wanted to go the only part now was getting in. Three letters came in the mail, two were good, one was bad. I had to choose between Michigan and Notre Dame. I did listen to what my parents wanted because they were paying the bill but ultimately I chose my college based on the criteria I had set up. Also, my trips to each campus were so intregal in helping me make a choice as to where to go. I chose Notre Dame because it meet all of my demands. But the most important factor in choosing college is the gut instinct, every kid has it, there is some place that they know they will do well at, and it is crucial to be honest with yourself and make the responsible choice. College is an important thing, so I am pretty happy with myself knowingI did all I could to choose the college that was the best for me. |
