Please Pass The Fleas Please!

The Bottom Line When in doubt ask a professional.

I love this category because I have spent so many years trying to battle Fleas, ticks, and parasites that have been trying to invade my pets. I have used every over the counter product imaginable, from dips, powders, shampoos, to oral product, foams, and even drops that you place on them.

I have finally come to the conclusion that I have never been successful. It seems as if all of the products I used seem to work for just a short time if at all.

I finally ended up asking my vet for advice. She offered to place each of my dogs on professional products that were right for them. These medications end up costing me about thirty dollars a month to treat three dogs. Does this seem like a lot of money?

I can't even begin to tell you how much I ended up spending on flea bombs, flea sprays, dog wormers, on top of the over counter remedies that I was buying on a monthly basis.

I also did not like the fact that the flea bombs that were let off in my house were spraying poisons into the air and all over everything that was left exposed to these bombs. At the time I was using these products my son was just a baby. I did not like the idea of him crawling around all over the floor exposed to this stuff.

I remember trying to dip my larger dog who hated these products. I ended up getting more of the product on myself than I did on the dog. I also did not like the way my dogs smelled of these products. Most of the time they did not feel clean after a treatment and would leave a residue wherever they sat.

I have to admit then when it comes to choosing the right flea and tick controls going to a vet was the best thing I could have done. My vet even was able to save me money by prescribing flea medications that killed harmful parasites including heart worms.

I also would like to include the fact that when purchasing a pet do not assume that your puppy has had any such type of wormers, shots, or flea control. I learned this the hard way.

When controling fleas, ticks, and other harmful parasites it is always best to take your pet to a professional vet before you bring him or her home. Make sure that when you buy your dog you obtain a health certificate. If you have a health certificate you can be more confident that your dog has been taken care of properly right from the start.

I recently purchased a dog from a so called Safe Haven. This lady who sold me my puppy said she had given her wormer, flea control, and all of her shots but the last set.

This lady sent me on my way and asked me for $35.00. She called it a donation. Later I found out that it was illegal to sell dogs in my state and she was a fraud.

I had trusted her so I brought my puppy home for a few days without taking it to the vet first. It turned out that this woman did not give my dog any type of wormer, flea control, or shots.

My little pup almost died in my arms from the neglect of someone that I thought I was able to trust. My puppy was infested with a severe case of round worms, fleas, mites, and other parasites. She moaned and groaned in sheer pain for days. It was heart breaking and cruel.

So I will never believe someone when they say they have treated a puppy with anything. I will ask an expert. It is just not worth trying to play doctor and risk harming my pet or my children.

(Just in case any one was wondering I had made a few phone calls. I found out that this lady is under criminal investigation for animal abuse and cruelty.)

Enjoy your pet, but remember to play it smart.
