Make the most of your time ----- Should I Take a Part-Time Job?Apr 29 '01 (Updated Oct 21 '05) Write an essay on this topic. The Bottom Line Try it out if you have the time :) Spending time in college is not only about the academics. It is also not only about the drinking and the partying. College is about preparing yourself for the real world, and to make sure that you are ready to make the decisions that will be necessary later on in life. Some of these decisions revolve around making money and learning how to provide for yourself when you make it out of college. Part-time jobs can be that solution if you want to take the time to get one. Lots of people that are in college, do not have the benefit of either having everything paid for by their parents, or by the Government. So, some people have no choice but to take on either a part-time or full-time job. While the jobs do take up some of the time, you can still do well academically and work at the same time. It is a myth to believe that you cannot succeed at both of them at the same time. When I came to college, I fell under that myth just like many other people have. But, when I figured out that I was going to need money during the year, that I could not make it all during the summer, and that things were really expensive at college, I decided to get a job. The bonuses to having a job are very high on my list of thoughts. By having a job, people are put into a position of having responsibilities that they will be expected to have later on in life as well. Having the job in the morning makes you get out of bed, and having it at night makes you do things other than partying. It is a great feeling to be able to get a pay-check every second week, and when you can purchase things with it, it makes you feel all that much better that your hard work has paid off in the way of a present for yourself. I love being able to walk down to my mail-box and see my paycheck just sitting there in it. It makes me feel like I have spent my time doing something that is worthwhile, and that I have not just been wasting my time hanging out with my friends every night. Part-time jobs do not take up a lot of time in the entire scheme of things, and there is really no reason not to take the chance at doing one. Not only will it make the person in the job grow, but mature into a real-world survivor. Making your own living early, will help you when you are worried about the mortgage, or the college payments for your children 20 years down the road. On top of that, you need to take into account the relationships that you will develop with your co-workers. These can become friendships that will last for the rest of your life, and the ones that I have made are going to last me a long time after I am out of this job. Now, there are down-sides to people who need to party, or need to have down time. If you have a job, then that time gets limited, and you may feel more stressed out. In that instance, the key is to make sure that you balance your schedule out so that you have enough time for work and for the fun in your days. |
