Top Sports Movies (or how to cram 19 films into a top ten list)

Often sappy and sentimental, we know what to expect from most sports movies. Here's my picks for some of the better ones.

alot of great memories with "The Natural", "The Sandlot" and "Searching For Bobby Fischer", and good for you for sticking up for chess!

I loved the list, and also agreed with many picks.

Very nice job indeed.

Hey Neal... Actually, I believe Pinoccio appears briefly in The Natural... a cameo before being turned into a baseball bat.

Speaking of documentaries... I'm now kicking myself for forgetting to mention When We were Kings!

and I am doubly-impressed that you mentioned "Hoop Dreams" in the top ten. I think that is my favorite sports film of all time.

What a list! From chess to boxing to karate and many others, you've covered the waterfront. Great job. I've read two of your lists and enjoyed them too.

Thanks... but hard to fathom being "courageous" over some cyber bits and opinions ;-)

Great list, but where's "The Longest Yard"? It has some of the most intense sports scenes I've seen in any sports film.

It's funny you should mention Frequency, because as I was reading your introductory remarks, I was thinking about sports movies that I'd seen recently and darn if Frequency didn't pop into my mind first! And then I scroll down a couple of times and there it is. You're right, it's not a typical sports movie, but so much of the action swirls around the ball games.

Great choices. I like your unorthodoxy.

Make your own list Scott... I do have Eight Men Out listed at a review I did a while back at WBM on the top ten baseball movies of all time, but it got left off when I expanded that idea to include all sports.

How could you not list Eight Men Out, which is (in my opinion) the finest film ever made about the sport of baseball?

I love sports flicks, and I really enjoyed this piece. Good work!

I too had Raging Bull picked out before I got to the end of your review. Add Escape to Victory, Chariots of Fire and Any Given Sunday for me.

Actually I have this one coming to me very soon via an online movie DVD place... I saw it many years ago and agree that it's an excellent baseball movie.

One great sports movie..... (Reply to this comment)

That I just caught the end of the other night was PRIDE OF THE YANKEES. Even though it was made in the 40's and was such a tearjerker if there ever was one, Gary Cooper as Lou Gehrig was an excellent baseball movie. Also Paul Newman as Rocky Graziano in SOMEBODY UP THERE LIKES ME would have made my Top 10.

But I agree with your #1 ~ Raging Bull. Even in black and white you could feel that bright red blood splatter the fans in his fight with Sugar Ray Robinson. "You never put me down Ray" ~ I will always remember that.

Excellent Review!

..list! It was cool to see an old favorite (Running Brave) among the honorable mentions. I also thought Vision Quest was a good movie that didn't get enough attention.
