When I signed up for AT&T wireless, I went into a company owned At&T Wireless store (on Geary St in San Francisco) and was assured that I would have a month to try out the phone and if I didn't like it, no problem. I would not be locked in to a contract. The rep also STRESSED that I could go on to AT&T Wireless.com and keep track of my minutes so that I would NEVER go over. So, believing what I was told, I used my AT&T Wireless phone for the first month and diligently tracked my minutes on line. The services was fine and I was under on my minutes. Sweet! Then I received my first month's bill. I had gone over by $100 dollars! I was in shock. I called At&T Wireless customer service and spoke to a supervisor. (My first bill came after the 30 day "test" period). She also explained that their website is not accurate and that I had "roamed" which made my minutes higher on the actual bill. When I explained that this was impossible as I NEVER LEFT MY HOME AREA! I was always in my local calling area, she explained that roaming was when my phone was "off an At&T Tower" and this happens in my home area a lot. They use other cell phone towers to supplement their coverage. When I explained that this was not what roaming meant and that this was false and deceptive business tactics, she indicated that I was locked in a contract for 2 years and that I should have read the fine print. Basically, the supervisor was extremely RUDE and hateful. After several other calls, emails, even letters to At&T Wireless headquarters I got a big fat nothing of a response. They did however change their fine print on their website to say their on line minute tracking is NOT accurate (SO WHY HAVE IT?)
They lied to me when they sold me the phone and they tricked me into a 2 year contract. I ended up having to pay $100 extra my very first month! How do I feel about At&T Wireless? I can only stress DO NOT TRUST THESE PEOPLE. They are evil. They will lie to your face and its clear their business strategy is to get as many people into 2 year contracts as possible. I continued to write letters and finally after a year I got one email back that said this was "impossible" that At&T wireless would not misrepresent themselves. Well, all I can say is that my contract is up with them in 6 months and even though Cingular is merging with them, that won't happen until 2005 according to AT&T Wireless. So bottom-line AT&T wireless, "you may have got me on the hook for 2 years but I will NEVER do business with you again or your parent company At&T". I have canceled all of my At&T long distance for my business (2 small businesses) and my personal accounts (If its not "affiliated with AT&T", their parent company then take your AT&T name off the wireless company!!). I also urge everyone I know to switch to another long distance company besides At&T and also to NEVER get a contract with At&T Wireless. As a small business owner when I have had problems with other companies, a professional letter from me usually gets a return call or letter promising at least to investigate., At&T Wireless doesn't care to respond. Its clear this attitude is from the top management and its clear their business plan doesn't care at all about the end user. They are a poor excuse of a company, in my opinion. Beware.
