It works! (Reply to this comment)
by lisam67
I spent 8 minutes in a level 5 tanning bed this afternoon and I am paying for it dearly. I am not really in much pain but I itch like nobody's business. Tried cool shower, Solarcaine and Aloe Gel w/ Lidocaine to no avail. Finally I took a cool shower again, put some vinegar in a spray bottle and proceeded to spray myself down. It stung a little at first and I thought "What have I just done to myself". But then the relief came. I think I can finally go to bed and actually get some sleep. Thanks for the wonderful tip!

indiana sunburn (Reply to this comment)
by trcherry49
I live in south bend, and yesterday I went to silver beach in st Joe Michigan. I thought nothing of it because I had already had a pretty good base tan. So without thinking I stayed in the sun for six hours and my legs and backside are so burnt I couldn't even walk without them cramping up. I tried the vinegar and I swear the pain, stinging and horrible tightness went away!! Great remedy!!!

Last, but not Least - sunburnt lips (Reply to this comment)
by fairskin
I had lip gloss & not sunscreen lip balm & my lips got burnt also. Have you ever seen someone who had too much collegen put in their lips? That's what it looked like. Felt like I had lips 5 sizes too big. A cold compress for about 15 minutes & then put on real Aloe Vera from my aloe plant & when it dried applied Vitamin E. It is finally starting to get better & I don't look like I had bad cosmetic surgery done. Can't believe people pay $ for that. Get sunburned lips & try it for 3-4 days & you may change your mind. Looks & feels awful.

Help for Stinging Sunburn (Reply to this comment)
by fairskin
Came home from ocean & took a cool shower to rinse off the salt & took a lukewarm/cool bath. Added 3 heaping tbsps of Baking Sida & 1/2 cup of Oatmeal, it cools the burn. Only sit it in for 15-20 minutes or you will feel worse. didn't use the vinegar & tried aloe after sun, even that didn't stop the stinging. Didn't sleep last night so I tried the spray on vinegar, we had apple cider & it is helping some. will do it again & then put on the after sun to moisturize. Did the oatmeal soak bath, which feels wonderful & then sprayed the vinegar. It may not have worked as well, as this is 3rd day. 1st day didn't feel bad, it was the next day I was in pain & stinging. If I ever get another sunburn, in the next milinum, I'll do the vinegar within 24 hours.

What worked & What didn't work & Why - Important (Reply to this comment)
by fairskin
I cover everything with sunscreen & have 2 different kinds, 1 w/30 SPF, I put on the front & face. 45+ SPF was sprayed on my backside. Started my tan in April so I was ahead, I thought. My husband and I both got burnt on the side of the 45+. Strange as we used the product many times & it worked great, even stays on in the ocean. Called the Co. to find out what happened, they asked me for the expiration date on it. It had expired 2 months ago & she said the active ingredient was NO LONGER WORKING, the most important part of this product, thus is why it didn't work. They sent me a new bottle & also their after sun with Vitamin E & Aloe for free. It works fabulous. Make sure your sunscreen has not expired, so you do not burn.

You are my newest best friend. I had never heard of using vinegar. I became very sunburned last weekend.. Tonight I started with the intense itching, as my skin was starting to heal. I hate itching, it is worse than pain. I filled a spray bottle with white vinegar and on the second application, there is very little itching remaining. Thank you, Thank you, Thank you. I was so worried that I would not get any sleep tonight. It is looking very good to have a good nights sleep. I Love You!!!!! Thank you for sharing

I took a shower on the cooler side and patted myself dry. And about 15 minutes after, I sprayed vinegar on myself. It still itched after that and so about an hour later I tried more vinegar, but still nothing. I ended up just taking some AdvilPM and went to sleep by that ..

I bought 2 cans home and my daughter sprayed it all over my back and it worked almost instantly! I cannot recommend this product enough. I would have paid $1000 to stop the itch! I was actually sick to my stomach from it. I never in my life not even having 2 children and one was a C-sec have felt anything so unbearable. I hope this helps someone.

You might think this seems crazy, but take a HOT SHOWER.

Instant relief. And you can't damage your burn because it's already healing.

Trust me on this one, it actually really really works.

Still works after 24 hours!! (Reply to this comment)

Wow! Thank you SO much for this! It was literally like God came down and took my burning and stinging pain away! Lol! But seriously... My legs got extremely sunburned in FL yesterday and I did not try this remedy until today (about 30 hours later) after the burn. I must have been burnt very badly because it has still taken a lot of the heat and pain out of my legs. I think it would have obviously worked better if I did it ASAP after the burn like you instructed, but it still helped very much today after the fact. Thank you so much for this idea - it's a miracle!!!

I have been a sun worshiper for 30 years. I always push the limit, when the limit has gone over, I use vinegar! It always works and it also reminds me of my teenage years at campgrounds chasing and hanging out with the opposite sex. This has conditioned me to be fond of the smell of apple vinegar, citronella oil, and "off" as a reminder of good times. Nothing beats coming back from the beach and putting on that soothing vinegar a couple times in the eve. It also repels mosquitos (I think) Anyway, you can't go wrong, It won't hurt you at all....I mean we consume it for gosh sakes!!!! TOTALLY WORKS, 100% . Remember, time is not on your side, so get vinegar A.S.A.P. after exposure to tha sun......

by babbaluu
My mom used the vinegar, too. I'm orig. from IN, also...must be the Hoosier KnowHow!! -But to keep clothing seams from rubbing, put on a very soft, smooth cotton knit T-shirt--INSIDEOUT! - It's amazing how much less abrasion is felt without having the seams disturbing the skin surface!! I have 2 I keep in my swimsuit drawer that I've had for at least 20 years (the more they are washed, the softer they get!} - If you burn a lot, buy an expensive heavier-quality cotton T-shirt, wash it several times (I use "free and clear"-type detergent and softeners), and keep it just for sunburn use for yourself and your family!! It is definitely worth it! --Especially. WEAR IT TO SLEEP! That's when you inadvertantly disturb your skin, particularly those sensitive shoulder areas, the most! -Hope this is helpful. My mom definitely did seem to know best!

This works SO well!!
I have such fair skin (so fair my grandma uaually thinks im sick whenever its winter because my skin is so pale!)... and anyways, my skin always peels...i even tan and then peel. And i always burn if i ever forget to put sunscreen on. I got a horrible burn from a pool party yesterday (yikes!) and my graduation is in 3 days!! (i have to wear a white dress... not something that camoflauges sunburn very well...) and my skin was in so much pain i couldn't have anything touch me. I put the vinegar on not 20 minutes ago and i feel SO MUCH better!! It's a miracle!
I will have to wait to see if it tans instead of peels (which would be fabulous) but I am so glad i came across this article and i will recommend it to everyone!! thank you so much! :)

It works (Reply to this comment)
by candewish
Ten years ago, one hour after a severe sunburn my
wife insisted that I apply vinegar to the burn. As a big skeptic of home remedies, I applied vinegar to only one of my two burned arms. In a matter of minutes the pain disappeared from the vinegar arm, and I quickly applied vinegar to the remainder of my burn. The blistering and peeling I expected never happened! I am now a convert and proselytizer for the vinegar sunburn remedy.

Important points -

1) apply vinegar as soon after the burn as possible - the next day to too late for much benefit.

2) As mentioned in other commentary, applying vinegar with a paper towel works just fine.

3) Any kind of vinegar works. You may smell a bit like a salad with wine or apple cider vinegar, but if that's all you have - use it. The remedy is the acetic acid in vinegar. Do not dilute the vinegar with water. Use it straight. Vinegar is normally only 5% acetic acid - at that concentration it is already diluted.

4) A single application is all you need.

Vinegar Remedy (Reply to this comment)
by mccuen
I recently (yesterday) obtained a very bad sunburn from the tanning bed. I tried the vinegar remedy and had no relief. I have soaked in a tub in the vinegar and applied it directly to the skin. I don't know if my sunburn is much worse than others but it hasn't worked for me yet. I was also told to take Aspirin and have done that and it did work on the pain. Does anyone swear by anything else that has worked for them, I am willing to try anything!

works wonders from my experience (Reply to this comment)
by dbatesphoto
I am used to getting 1-2 minor sunburns each year and can deal with the pain, but I usually get my first sunburn of the year in the early spring when the Alabama Sun is not quite as cruel. This year I was having some medical issues where I wasn't spending much time outside. So this week when I finally got a chance to spend the day out in the sun, mixed with some extremely old sunblock I was cooked redder than a boiled lobster. Even my feet where they were not covered by sandals was scorched. I was in so much pain I was willing to try anything to deal. Since Aloe Vera, showers, damp clothes and nothing else would work I got on line and started looking.

Since I only had a quarter bottle of vinegar and no spray bottles I had to think of another way of applying it. I came up with the idea of using a Paper Towel (the softer the better). Instead of spraying I patted the soaked paper towel over my burns. This works great for your face as well since I wouldn't advise spraying around your eyes, mouth, ears or nostrils. The spray bottle works better for arms, legs, neck and your body unless you have someone else to apply it for you, but the paper towel works great for the head and neck.

Combined with the Aloe Vera it really provides a great 1-2 punch to knock out the pain. will have to wait to see if it turns to a tan or peels.

I'll be honest, I was pretty skeptical about the whole vinegar thing, but after reading it on several other websites and no longer being able to stand the discomfort I went and bought some vinegar. This was literally only twenty minutes ago, and now I am able to do whatever without being in pain! My back and the backs of my legs were super super red and it was very painful to sleep, wear jeans, or just flat out move. It's great. Thank you for the advice, it's wonderful!!! The relief was almost instant. :)

I have been using this remedy for years and swear by it. I have cheap Irish skin and I will burn time and time again throughout the summer. I shower and then just stand in the shower and pour it wherever I am burned and then shand in the shower (without the water on) for about 2 minutes and the rinse off, not with soap, just water. I pat myself dry and then use Banana Boat after sun lotion. It works everytime and even on the worst sunburns!

"have yet to find the best solution, purchased or made at home, for the itching that can be totally consuming, when you did NOT do the vinegar previously."

Use CALAMINE lotion and LOTS of it. I have just experienced my first itching sunburn. I have been sore before but itching is unbearable, I was just bouncing off the walls in agony trying not to scratch begging for soreness because its easy to sooth that.

This stuff works, apply it regularly - it wont get rid of it completely but it reduces it to bearable levels and you'll be able to sleep.

Hope this helps someone else suffering the horrid itch.

Cheers!

Hello!

I tried your vinegar & after sun lotion remedy to the letter! I live in New Zealand and got burned by our super harsh UV rays. Since my sister had been raving about vinegar i thought I'd give your remedy a try. I had to use NO-AD after sun tan preserver with cocoa butter, vit. E & Aloe Vera since the Bananna boat wasn't avaliable here but still it worked and I am such an easy peeler (I've even had my "tan" peel!!!)

Thanks so much!!

Itching Sunburns (Reply to this comment)
by ameritica1
I agree that vinegar is a marvelous solution to sunburns. Having spent multiple years in the intense sun of the tropics and failing to always be as careful about sunburn....but I have yet to find the best solution, purchased or made at home, for the itching that can be totally consuming, when you did NOT do the vinegar previously. I tried it after I started peeling/itching instead...and it stings terribly and doesn't alleviate the symptoms very long....
any suggestions?

Hi Gloria! Thanks for the nice comment. I am glad I could help. I just can't believe how excellent the vinegar works! I wish I would have known this when I was a teenager. I looked like a lobster all the time and went through horrible burning pain. Now, I use sunscreen to protect myself. I have had to use the vinegar twice this year so far. Once on my neck and shoulders and once on my upper legs. I did not peel at all. Vinegar is such a miracle worker.
Have a wonderful day!

Okay, you convinced me (Reply to this comment)
by glomarrone
Hi Crista,

I burn terribly so I've learned not to stay out in the sun long without lotion on me. Usually I sit under an umbrella but now tan quickly anyway just being under an umbrella.

I will keep this advice in mind when I have visitors who don't listen to me about the sun's rays in Florida where we have a vacation condo. We get a lot of visitors who turn brick red because they underestimate the strong sun down in FL. I usually advise them to take aspirin. Your idea is great. I always have vinegar in my condo and an empty spray bottle. I'll get some of the aloe also. Thanks for sharing.

See you again.
