With the given price of these Hawkings Technology modems, they perform very well. As with many modems in this price range, it utilizes the Motorola Chipset, making it a software-based modem. This means the computer relies on the processor to do a lot of the modulating and demodulating instead of having the modem do it. This leads to increased processor usage, and a slower computer. This is the price you pay for a cheap modem. However, the Hawkings Technology modem uses less processor power then many other modems in its price range. Of the handful I have tested, the Hawkings ranks #1 in my little 'cheap modem roundup'. Easily found under $20, this is a great buy for someone on a budget that needs a 56k modem. I have come to trust Hawkings Technologies to provide great components from webcams, to switches, to modems.
This modem does have a small problem with line noise involving disconnections. However this is not unusual for a modem in this class and the Hawkings certainly doesn't have any worse of a time with noise then any other modem in this price range.
