Yes, at the moment they are a great bargain, considering price and features.

.. you're totally right. I was going by the Accord's MSRP (plus destination cost) of $26,890, but Edmunds says $24,792 is closer to the actual transaction price. I didn't realize Accords were selling for so little over invoice!

I agree that the Maxx has greater versatility than an Accord-class sedan, but disagree with your assessment of EX V6's price; the TMV on the 2004 (in my zip code, at least) is just under 25k, that's without navigation. Maybe 27k WITH Nav?

I agree with your appraisal that the Malibu has really improved in quality and content, although I'm not at all smitten with it's looks. I checked out a new one a co-worker just purchased and I was very impressed with the thought that went into this new design.

Your comparing the steering feel to that of a ship's helm was original and apt. Well done!

I thought the new Malibu was ugly when it came out, too. Now that I'm seeing them on the road, I've decided they look better in person than in photographs. But still, I can certainly see where you're coming from--it seems like they were trying to give the Malibu a blocky, trucklike look, and that can only go so far on a midsize sedan.

I make a point of leaving styling out of my reviews, though. I know that looks are a big deal when choosing a car, but it's such a subjective matter... I figure readers will just look at the picture and make up their own mind anyway, and since my reviews are already kinda lengthy, I'd rather not waste the space.

About the Malibu Maxx being a bargain, I think it probably is. The LT I test-drove was very well equipped, and stickeed at around $25,000. When I test-drove one, the salesperson said a $1,500 rebate was available, with an additional $1,000 on top of that after May 12. So you'd be looking at $22,500 for a car with leather, heated seats, ABS, etc., which isn't bad at all. Plus, to get this kind of cargo versatility in another car, you'd have to look at small SUVs, and with a similar level of equipment, they're all in the $22,000-$26,000 range. And the Honda Accord EX V6 would be way up around $27,000. It is more refined and better-handling--I'd take one over the Malibu too--but I think a lot of people will be happy to drive the Malibu and save five grand.

One point you did not choose to cover, is the exterior. I have not driven either the Maxx or the Malibu sedan, but both (to me) look UGLY. Sorry, just personal opinion. Of course, other top cars in this segment (Camry, Accord) will not win any beauty contexts either.

Is the Maxx a bargain? I like the versatility of vagons and hatchbacks, but, at 25k (in the absense of discounts and rebates - what's Edmunds TMV on the Maxx), I would take an Accord EX V6 any minute.
