The Bottom Line The adolescent football player is often referred to as the Junior size football player. He or she should be equipped and coached properly in consideration of their size.
Having coached Pop Warner football for ten years I can tell you that size is very important. The term Junior size in football mostly refers to children that participate in recreational league and high school football. These children are often just beginning or in the adolescent stages of there lives. There bodies are just beginning to make the transformation form undeveloped to developed. It is important to understand that the Junior size relates to properly equipping the young football participant. The equipment that fits a 18 year old player will not in most cases fit a 14 year old player. More importantly, the type of body that the player has should determine the type of equipment worn. Most parents or first time coaches can often find helmets, shoulder pads, arm pads, and other football equipment labeled Junior size. The football industry has really become consumer friendly in regards to sizes in equipment and accessories. The majority of your junior sized players will be found at the middle school and high school levels. Their bodies are just in the middle of not to small but not yet big enough. Sometimes it can be difficult to fit a Junior size child. Finally, remember that Junior size is just what it says. These young players are just really beginning to understand the power and uses of their bodies. Don't over burden them with the wrong equipment. Let their development occur naturally. Explain to them what league they play in. by Mark |
