| Javelina's Full Review: Oxo 12.75" Bottle Brush (black) |
Ive owned my share of Oxo kitchen tools, but never one of their cleaning tools. The first time I used the Oxo 12.75 bottle brush was at work in our kitchen. With all of our coffee addicts, mugs tend to pile up. The brush was meant to be a preventative measure to keep the kitchen clean, but now it just means that a select few of us (myself included) take on the task of cleaning up (because we cant stand it)! Because it is so cheap, I ended up getting a brush for my kitchen at home as well.
The Oxo Bottle Brush
OXOs GOOD GRIPS Bottle Brush features two types of bristles for gentle cleaning and serious scrubbing. The durable neck flexes for easy reach inside bottles, and its soft handle is non-slip, even under running water. Our Brush is gentle enough to clean stemware as well as baby bottles, vases, carafes, pitchers and other containers.
This brush cost $3.99, and you can find it at a variety of stores, including Linens N Things or Bed Bath and Beyond. Keep in mind these two stores accept each others coupons, and BB&B will take expired coupons (at least mine does).
The dimensions of the brush are 13" x 2" x 2", and it weighs a mere 2 oz. The nylon bristles are both white (softer) and blue (stiffer). The rubbery handle is soft and comfortable, and provides texture as well so that the brush wont slip out of your hands, even with water or soap. It has the Oxo logo imprinted on it, and a hole at the top for hanging.
The Oxo bottle brush is dishwasher safe. It is not recommended for microwaves (not that it would occur to me to put this in a microwave!).
My Thoughts & Experiences
I have found that this brush is pretty versatile. The first thing I noticed is that it is great for mugs, because of the shape of the brush. Instead of being rounded, the top of the brush is flat, with strong, blue bristles (see product pic) that reach right into the corners of the mugs.
But this brush isnt limited to just mugs or bottles. You can pretty much use it on anything, and I have used it on myriad items, from flower vases to bowls. The bristles are nylon, so they are safe to use on non-stick cookware, which we have plenty of. The handle of the brush, where it extends into the bristles, has a rounded shape, which will minimize any scraping to dishware, etc.
The handle is pretty long, and can reach a good distance. I have lots of Nalgene bottles that I use almost daily (for work, working out, hiking, camping, etc). The bottles are pretty tall, and some have narrow necks, so the brush works well. The handle is slightly flexible, which helps to reach into those corners. The handle is also not perfectly round, so when laid down on a countertop, wont roll. (Sometimes I lay the brush with the brush part over the sink, to drip dry).
The hole in the top is convenient - great for hanging. We keep ours on a little hook in the kitchen, which is convenient and handy. It helps to keep track of the brush, and by hanging it, it means less time sitting in a dirty sink and brewing with bacteria.
I love that this is dishwasher safe. Im so sick of sponges sitting in the sink, full of germs, and I can only give it a rinse and some time in the microwave. With the bottle brush, I can just stick it in the dishwasher, and voila, it is fresh and clean.
The brush we use at work gets a ton of use, as well as the one I own at home. It will last you a lot longer than some cheap, bacteria-ridden sponge. Because it is easy to clean and is well constructed, it will last a while in the kitchen.
Lastly, all Oxo products are guaranteed, so if they break due to a defect or you arent happy with it, the company will refund your money or replace the product. I have never had to take them up on their guarantee, but it is reassuring to have it there and to know that this company so strongly backs their products.
Overall Thoughts
The Oxo bottle brush is great for not just bottles, but cleaning other items. The long handle and soft bristles allow for versatile use. This brush comes in handy as well for situations where I dont want to touch messes with a sponge. Maybe its not a 10 pole, but you at least have about 12 inches of handle between you and the mess! I have no problems with this brush and find it to be well thought out and very helpful.
