We are thinking of buying a truck and your buying tips helped a ton. Esp the parts about 4x4. I was leaning towards it because it helped when we lived in very snowy conditions, but you're right... it was only snowy enough for 4x4 a couple weeks a year so it's really just another thing to maintain on the car that we may not use much!

Anyway, thanks for the great advice and I will be throwing this epinion my husband's way!

Your Mastery of Truck Buying Tips (Reply to this comment)
by LEDOMAINE
...is astounding. Your conclusions as why to or not to buy a specific way, "I have no clue why people who live in places like Florida, or most parts of Texas or California buy it. They're hauling around a bunch of extra hardware essentially for nothing." sounds like nothing if not common sense. You're a handy guy to have around and your advice is impressive on this topic.

Thanks for another informative (and, amazing to someone like me who'd never consider owning my own truck) review.

As an V8 F150 owner ... (Reply to this comment)

I would say go with the V8 if even only for resale purposes.
In the 1997 and newer F150s the very reliable workhorse 5.0L I-6 has been replaced with a 4.2L V6 which in South Carolina seem to have substantially lower resale ($2,000-$3,000 less)value for some reason.
Why Ford replaced a perfectly good I-6 that lasts forever beats the heck out of me.

Diesels are great! (Reply to this comment)
by cowboyind
I love diesel trucks. Problem is, to get one you have to get a full size truck, and also a heavy duty model (at least 3/4 ton). My wish is that manufacturers would start putting a small diesel in the compact trucks such as Rangers and S-10s. A little I-6 diesel would be incredibly reliable, would probably deliver 30 mpg, and would be a huge success with companies that have delivery fleets and anyone else who wants a super-economical, reliable truck.

The Cummins diesel in your Dodge is a great engine - maybe the best available in a pickup.

Gas prices rising (Reply to this comment)

With the cost of gas going up up up, folks might want to consider a diesel. Our '98 Dodge Ram is a diesel and gets decent mileage, and the price of "fuel" is lower than gas. Your thoughts on diesel v. gas?

Nice review!
