| LILvoyce's Full Review: Servaas Laboratories Barkeeper's Friend Cleanser 1... |
I was out one day and was looking for my usual brand cleansing polish, when I happened to run into the Servaas Laboratories Bar Keeper's Friend Cleanser & Polish. I looked at the can and was wondering why the dollar price difference between this can and my usual brand? I decided to take the plunge and buy the 12 oz can of Bar Keeper's Friend just to give it a try. I was curious. I purchased this product for $1.99 at my local Winn Dixie.
What Does This Product Claim to Do?
Bar Keeper's Friend claims that it can remove rust, clean and polish items that are stainless steel, fiberglass, porcelain, glass cook tops, copper, tile, and brass.
On the back of this can it gives tons of uses in places like your kitchen, bathroom, laundry fabric, general household cleaning, and the garage. I was very surprised to see that you can used this product in your laundry. The directions say that you have to test the fabric for color fastness first. It claims that it will remove yellow iron stains that your bleach won't. I must admit that I was timid about trying this. I don't want to test one of my garments out until they are seriously stained and I have exhausted all possibilities of getting my garment clean first. I will however keep this product in mind next time I have a problem.
Barkeeper's Friend cleans and polishes with mild abrasives.
Directions
(Directions taken from can): Sprinkle BKF on a thoroughly wet cloth and rub gently. If applying BFK directly to metal, porcelain or plastic, make certain surface is wet-then rub gently until rust or discoloration disappears. Rinse for difficult stains, rusts spots, tarnished surfaces.. make a paste by adding a few drops of water to BFK. Let paste remain on stain no longer than one minute before rubbing. Rinse immediately.
My Experiences With Bar Keeper's Friend
When I purchased this product I only had intentions on using it to clean and polish my stainless steel kitchen sink. I was surprised when I actually tried this product on other thing than just the sink, which by the way works wonderful at leaves my kitchen sink clean and sparkles.
I was looking at my husbands coffee pot. I hate looking at it up on my counter. It is old and has a lot of hard water stains on the pot. I don't drink coffee, but I just couldn't stand looking at this cloudy looking pot any longer. It was starting to look like an eye sore. I was reading on the can where it said that it would clean glass cook tops and figured it was a long shot, but why not try it on the coffee pot?
I waited for the hubby to leave for work and I broke out the Bar Keeper's friend and a soft dish cloth. I dabbed a bit of water in the pot shook a bit of the white powdery BKF in the pot. I waited a few seconds and began to gently scrub for about a minute. I rinsed, and my husbands coffee pot looked brand new. I was amazed.
I normally use gloves when I work with any cleaners, but happened to be out. I noticed that the Barkeepers Friend actually worked better than my normal cleaner in some instances. I also noticed that it was much gentler on my hands. I was expecting this product to irritate my hands, and it didn't.
For some reason someone gave my daughter some beautiful copper jewelry. She hadn't warn it in years because she could never find anything to get the discoloration off this stuff. I experimented with one of the rings that she had. It was a really thick copper band that looked like sort of a wedding band. I pulled out a small bowl and made a bit of paste out of the powder and a bit of water. I took an old toothbrush and began scrubbing. I waited a minute and then rinsed. You would not believe how her ring looks! Wow..I was impressed, and so was she. She wanted to know where I got the new ring? She was tickled when I told her that it was hers. She now wears her jewelery again and does not have to worry about her fingers or neck turning green. She regularly uses this product on her copper jewelry.
I have decided to use this on my stove top because that it is so gentle. I have not had any problems with scratching, or dullness. It works beautiful, and this product is easier to rinse off than my usual brand. I was surprised at the mildness of this product that yet works so well.
What I did not care for
If anyone has read any of my other reviews they would know that I am a scent freak. This product is unscented. I like the smell of clean when I get done cleaning. I guess this isn't really a complaint. I am just picky.
The other thing I don't understand, is that this product has in bold print to Keep Away From Children, then why can't they take the extra measure to place a cap on top of this open can? The can itself has a piece of tape that you pull off to open this product. I have resealed the can with this tape but after a short time of using this product the tape will not stay on.
The other thing is that the cautions and warnings do not seem to be in one general area on this can. You have to read all over the can to find out what all the warnings and cautions are. Most people don't bother to go that far.
I would recommend reading the entire can before you use this product. The main warning is to keep away from children, and not to mix with other chemicals like bleach or detergents.
Other Information
Contains: No Phosphates or perfume (What exactly is in this product I am not sure. I could not find ingredients anywhere on can.)

Overall
Barkeeper's Friend is a great product that I would recommend. If I could change one thing it would be the packaging.
