the place of our honeymoon . . .

Written: Mar 21 '01 (Updated Mar 22 '01)
Pros:Central location, wonderful architecture, superb service
Cons:rooms facing inward have less-than-spectacular views
The Bottom Line: This is a great "little" place, especially for a romantic getaway -- located in the most quaint and cute town in North America (in my opinion).

It was in the snowy winter of 2000 that my wife and I went as newly-weds on our honeymoon to Quebec City, to the Chateau Frontenac.

I have always been in love with Quebec City, ever since I spend a summer there as a student at the Universite de Laval. The fact that Quebec City is the only city in North America that was designated as a United Nations World Heritage Site gives you a hint of what to expect.

Then working as a travel agent, I was able to do in-depth search on where to stay in the city. Needless to say, being Quebec City's main landmark, the Chateau Frontenac stood out as the premier choice.

Being on a somewhat restricted budget as freshly graduated college students, we opted for a standard room facing the "courtyard." $100 per night was still within our price range. However, in hindsight, this is the only decision that I would do differently, if I was to replan my honeymoon at the Frontenac. As it turned out, the "courtyards" are narrow alleys, that are used 24-hours a day by an amazing number of delivery trucks, delivering everything from linens to food.

These alleys reminded me of entrances in an ant hill, constantly hustling and bustling with activity, day and night. I could not believe all that goes on behind the stage of a 500-room motel. Needless to say, all this brings along a constant noise level, which some people may find disturbing. Being a curious fella myself I found it pretty interesting, however, because it gave me a wonderful insight into inner workings of a large hotel. In return for this experience, on the other hand, you do get a not-so-scenic view. So you may want to fork out a little extra to get a room overlooking the grand Saint Lawrence River or the rooftops of Quebec!

Apart from that, I do not need to say much. The Chateau Frontenac is an amazing piece of turn-of-the century architecture. The interior is as classy as it comes. The service is at least 5-star. The rooms may not be quite as upscale and large as some people who are used to US-standards may expect, but neither is the price!!

And, by the way, if you do go, don't forget to take a dip in the swimming pool. It may not be the largest pool in the world, but the pool area, which may have been inspired by some of Europe's bathhouses, is a small gem by itself. Lounging in the hot tub, being gently massaged by a stream of bubbles, you can enjoy a beautiful view over the quaint historic houses and alleyways of Quebec!
