The Bottom Line: If you want a networked MFP, avoid this one and wait for other products to hit the market.

I've been looking at this printer for some time and had high expectations as I've had good luck with HP products in the past. The physical setup of the printer was straightforward - I chose to used the wired network interface. But when I got to the software install, things headed south.

The PC I installed this on is running XP Pro (a fresh install). I checked HP's website prior to installing the software. There was a newer version there (465MB!) so I downloaded it and installed that version. The printing functions worked fine, but the scanning function just would not work right. It was not possible to initiate the scan from the printer itself, and when it was initiated from the PC, it was incredibly slow (10-15 minutes per page).

I tried the online chat support (twice) which was largely a waste of time. I took several minutes to get a response to each message, and their line of questioning was frustrating. They repeatedly asked how it was connected (wired network)and after trying to tell me it was the network (it's not), then it must be low system resources on my PC (it's not), then their solution was to uninstall and re-install the software. Get this - they told me to run this batch file 4 times consecutively to make sure everything got uninstalled! Then they email me directions on how to install for the USB interface. It was very apparent that they didn't have a clue what they were talking about and were just anxious to get me off the phone.

Now after repeated re-installs, I cannot even connect the the printer. I guess this one goes back to Best Buy tomorrow.

It's really kind of sad to see HP's quality control and support has slipped this badly.
