Why in the world would I buy Scotch-Brite Heavy Duty Scour Pads? Could it be that I don't want to spend any more time in the kitchen then I have to?
Description
These pads are 6.0 in. x 3.8 in. in measurements. They are green with the name Scotch-Brite painted very lightly across one side of each scour pad. They come three to a pack for around 1.99 at just about any grocery store. I prefer not to call them scour pads, but rather I have nicknamed them my "Green Scrubbies." When I think of a scouring pad, I think of those steel wool pads. I have never been fond of steel wool.
Scotch-Brites claims that they make jobs fast and easy. You can use them on jobs such as cast iron pots, stove burners, broilers, garden tools, grates, grills, white wall tires and other household items.
They have a very gritty type of feel to them.
Cautions
Being that this is a highly effective scouring tool, Scotch Brite claims that they are not recommended for cleaning glass-ware, plastic-ware, porcelain, non-stick cookware, or polished, brushed or satin finished surfaces.
My Experience
Well, I have probably had several hundred experiences with these little pads, from using them in my home and even when had I worked in the Food Service Industry.
Food Service
When I worked in the Food Service Industry, I would make the inmates use these pads to scrub down any area in the kitchen that had stainless steel. This would include the baker area, salad prep area, and all stainless steel refrigerators, and work tables. First I would make the inmates boil large tubs of water. They would then transport the boiling water to large metal pots that were on push carts. They would then wheel the water to the area that they needed to clean such as the outside of the walk in cooler for example. They would then spray off the coolers with the water hose, and then begin to use the Scotch-Brite Pads to scrub down the coolers along with a bit of pink detergent. Then they would ladle pots of boiling water over the outside of the coolers and scrub again. They would finish by rinsing with boiling water. Between the use of the boiling water, the detergent, and the Scotch-Brite Pads, this was my key to making the food service kitchen sparkle.
We would use this same process all throughout the kitchen, including all bakers racks. I have found that this is the only sure proof way of getting the stainless steel grease free, spotless, and streak free. The institution would not run without them.
I have never paid any attention to the cautions, of course I am never scrubbing fine china and glassware. I have never had any problems with scratching or ruining any items that I have scrubbed or have allowed inmates to scrub. I have also instructed the inmates to hand wash all cook pots and baking pans with these pads. I have found that on the days that I would work, when we were out of Scotch-Brite Heavy Duty Pads I would find myself having to work overtime by at least three hours. These little pads have made a huge difference in large scale kitchens such as the one that I have worked in.
I have also instructed inmates to use these pads along with rubber gloves and bleach/detergent water to clean all baseboards, tiling, bathrooms, toilets, painted wooden doors, painted concrete walls, ovens insides and outsides, including oven racks, broiler pans, and all serving utensils, metal or plastic.
They are great for cleaning out the garbage cans, taking the mold off of painted picnic tables, Removing Stains off of formica table tops providing you use something like a scouring powder. They are nifty for taking dried food items off of stainless steel, and a must for cleaning out stainless steel sinks.
In My Home
I have used these to clean off dried pancake mix off my no-wax floor, along with any other food product that can be dripped unto the floor. I used them on my stove top with a bit of my favorite cleaner. I will used them to clean out my oven, on the fridge handle. I will use them to clean out my fridge racks, kitchen counters, in my tubs to remove any discolorations and rings in the tub. I love to use the Scotch-Brite Scouring Pads to get behind my faucets where dirt tends to hide. I will use them to clean my own pots and pans as well as a light scrub over for my non-stick cookware. I have had much luck when I just barely apply any pressure and give it a light rub over. I have never had any problems with scratching.
I find that using these pads will indeed get me out of the kitchen faster. They help to grab and pull dirt, grime, food particles, grease, paint chips, off of certain household products. I have also used this product to get my son's little plastic swimming pool cleaned. We have used it on just so many things that I can't even begin to touch base on all of them. Scotch-Brite is a must have in all homes. They are the best type of pads for my delicate hands and nails, especially when using rubber gloves.
What I do not like about this product
They do not do heat as well as the steel wool type of scouring pads do. Sometimes Steel Wool type pads are stronger at tackling jobs, but even these have their cons. I prefer to use the Scotch Brite over the Steel Wool whenever possible because the Steel Wool pads can unravel and places you at risk for being pierced by the Steel Wool. With this day and age of blood diseases, I prefer not to take that chance unless I am at my own home. Even then, I hate the feeling of Steel Wool in my Hands.
In some cases where you could use very high heat, steel wool would be more favorable, as the the Scotch-Brite could melt. They are more of a plastic type of scour pad.
I have also found that if not properly cleaned these scour pads can produce a foul odored scent from food products. You really have to care for these pads well if you plan on using them more than once. I would recommend washing these pads out with a bit of detergent and some boiling water, making sure that you have eliminated all food products from these pads. These pads do tend to pull grease, but with the high temperatures of the water will tend to make these pads clean. I don't mind sanitizing these pads with a good bleach and sanitizer.
When I am at home, I tend to wash them right in the wash machine after I have made sure I have cleaned them very well by hand. I will throw them in with a load of towels, aprons, and dishcloths. They will usually make it through the wash machine at least one time. They will soften a bit in the washer. I let them air dry, and they are ready for the next job. I always keep the kitchen scrub pads separate from other pads that I use in the house.
Overall
In my home these are a must have. Every place I have ever worked they are a must have. With proper cleaning and replacements of these pads, Scotch-Brite can be a very valuable tool in any kitchen.
