Connecticut College: Easy to Excel at!
Written: Mar 21 '01
Pros:VERY liberal, friendly, beautiful; Excellent: psychology, chemistry, arts, international students; Safe; No fraternities; Excellent professors.
Cons:Isolated without car; Some departments very small; Very few intellectuals among students; Homogeneous student body.
The Bottom Line: If you are highly intellectual, a big-city person, or GAY, then you will be frustrated. But one can endure for four years, especially with good financial aid.
Connecticut college is considered very competitive. It has one of the best psychology departments from among the liberal arts schools. In many areas, students can work on research closely with professors. Unfortunately, some of the departments are small and offer few courses. Many of the professors are highly qualified, but many of the students (despite a high sense of entitlement) do not have intellectual standards or aspirations adequate for top higher education. One of the best things at the Conn College is that it sponsors with $3000 a summer internship for every student in any area. There are several special certificate programs, an international one, a community service one, and an arts & technology one. The College is excellent for international students applying from countries with low incomes per capita, because it has few but full financial aid packages for foreigners. There are some opportunities to do summer research with professors and get stipends for that. Faculty, administration, and staff are very friendly, approachable, and, for the most part, competent. Unfortunately, culture and social life are provincial, especially with Boston and NYC so close and yet difficult to reach. Students without cars can feel extremely isolated and culture-deprived here. In terms of alcohol, drugs, and crime, the College is very safe, but restrictions and their enforcement are mild. There is an honor code, therefore the scheduling of exams is quite flexible. There are multiple ways for students to be involved with the College government, with activities, research, or community service. The library is excellent! Students get single rooms after the freshman year. The Student Housing office staff tend to infantilize the students and to treat them dictatorially. On the other hand, there is specialty housing for people who prefer a quieter, substance free, ecological, or multicultural environment. There is telephone with voicemail, T1 internet connection, and limited cable TV in every dorm room.
