Spiffy Little Gadget!

Written: Jun 15 '04
Pros:Fits neatly into palm, dishwasher safe, stores and dispenses dishwashing liquid
Cons:No big ones
The Bottom Line: Really cool little gadget. Simple and effective. Why didn't I think of it first!?!

As a family we're rough on our cleaning products. I don't know how many scrub brushes and dish cloths we've gone through in the kitchen, and I've never been a big fan of any of them -- until I got the Oxo Good Grips Soap Pump Palm Brush!

Product Description:

The Oxo Good Grips Soap Pump Palm Brush is a nifty little scrub brush that fits nicely into the palm of one's hand. Standing on its bristles, it measures roughly 3½ inches tall (and what a long name for such a little item). It is small, but effective!

The top "cap" piece is black and the very top of the cap is actually a soft release button for dispensing soap as you scrub. The next section down is a clear receptacle that holds dishwashing liquid. You unscrew the black lid from the clear receptacle to refill the soap. Protruding from the bottom are the white scrubbing bristles.

To use it you simply grasp the non-bristled end in your palm and start scrubbing. If you need some soap you just press down on the soft top and soap will start to drizzle onto whatever you are washing.

The OXO Good Grips Soap Pump Palm Brush is top-rack dishwasher safe, and is safe to use on non-stick cookware. It retails for around 4-5 dollars.

Our Experiences:

This little brush is an excellent solution for my cleaning needs. It fits very comfortably in my hand with its soft top, yet its stiff nylon bristles get the job done when I really need to scour something. Although the bristles feel quite stiff, they are able to scrub all of my pots and pans without leaving any scratches. When I need dishwashing liquid pressing down on the soft top releases the soap at just the right speed for me.

Because we have a toddler in the house, we installed locks on all of our low cabinet doors. This made getting the dishwashing liquid a bit more of a chore, as it is always locked up under the sink. Whereas I don't like leaving the big, unsightly bottle of dishwashing liquid out, I certainly don't mind leaving out my cute little OXO Palm Brush. Now I can keep a handy-dandy supply of dish soap out on the counter top, and because the brush's soap-container is clear it is easy for me to see when it needs to be refilled.

My very favorite thing about the OXO Good Grips Soap Pump Palm Brush is the fact that I can throw it into the dishwasher whenever it starts getting dingy. My biggest gripe about my old dishwashing scrubbers was that they started to look messy quickly and I never felt like I could get them clean (and what's the point of cleaning my dishes with something that looks grimy?) I've washed the OXO Palm Brush in my dishwasher a few times and it comes out looking as good as new!

I'm hard-pressed to come up with anything negative to say about the product. I guess the only thing that it doesn't do well is get down to the bottom of tall glasses (because there is no long handle to help you reach that far down). This really doesn't bother me much, as we mainly use our OXO Soap Pump Palm Brush on the stuff that isn't dishwasher-safe -- mostly pots and pans and the like, not glasses.

Quickie Summary:
Pros:

+) Top-rack dishwasher safe!
+) Strong nylon bristles great for scrubbing
+) Bristles long enough to get into those hard-to-reach places
+) Fits nicely into one's palm
+) Stores and dispenses dish soap
+) Super-easy to use!
+) Really cheap (we paid $4.00 at a Bed, Bath, and Beyond store)
Cons:
-) Can't clean down inside tall glasses (due to limited reach)

Final Thoughts:

This is quite a spiffy little kitchen gadget. It is an excellent little scrub brush that withstands the wear and tear that has decimated other cleaning products in our home.
